Reminds me of the Sixties protests. Trump is, I suppose, taking care that "the laws be faithfully executed". Seems like the problem is with the law.

Yes that and the judges enforcing the law.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -President Donald Trump's administration said it would deploy 2,000 National Guard troops on Saturday as federal agents in Los Angeles faced off against a few hundred demonstrators during a second day of protests following immigration raids.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the Pentagon was prepared to mobilize active-duty troops "if violence continues" in Los Angeles, saying the Marines at nearby Camp Pendleton were "on high alert."

How embarrassing for the administration that hundreds of ICE agents are being overwhelmed by a “few hundred demonstrators”.

Well, not exactly. You probably aren't old enough to remember the Sixties. That was a bad time. Worse, really, even than today. A lesson that I HOPE hasn't been forgotten is that the Government cannot win if it resorts to deadly force to restore "order". If ICE was "overwhelmed", it's largely because of the restraint on the use of live ammunition.

That's something I hope Trump himself remembers before he sends in the National Guard. I have said elsewhere that Trump doesn't seem to be particularly anxious to kill people.

But now that he has sent in the troops, I'm thinking he's painted himself into a nasty corner. It won't be easy to back down, TACO or no. The alternative is to follow the Vietnam Suicide Trail and keep increasing the violence until the protesters give up. They won't ever give up. Eventually, the horror and stupidity of making optional war on one's own people ends where it always ends; with the overthrow of the tyrant.

A possible idea he may have is that if he can solidify control of the armed forces, with enough chaos going on there might be an opportunity for activating full armed forces. Then when the 2028 election cycle starts he just tries to stop the election. Saying he’s delaying the election until the insurrection is brought under control.

Similar plans have worked in other countries.

His admin couldnt even find places for the National Guard to sleep last night. There is no way they can coordinate something as sophisticated as that.

I hope you’re correct. The critical question is whether or not it works. What is clear is that Trump wants to be an autocrat.

Yup. We should take his threats seriously, but I dont think he has a solid long-term strategy here.

Remember his long term plan in 2020. It was to say that the January 6 count said he won using bogus electors that were set up. If that failed the hope was they could claim enough of the states won by Biden could be nullified and sent to the state legislatures that were under Republican control that would give Trump the win. Final possibility was a vote by the Congress with each state getting one vote. Which would have been a Republican victory.

This current possible plan seems much simpler to me.

Except that he will have to maintain this emergency for 3 more years.

No it can be off and on depending on many factors.

Karen Bass is certainly thrilled that people are cheering the destruction of LA. Best thing that could have happened to her. Just a few months ago, the destruction of LA was considered a bad thing and it wasn't looking good for her political career.

Los Angeles is not being "destroyed." Nothing of the kind. This is a complete and purposeful over-reaction by the Trump administration in order to push his agenda. There is nothing about these protests that cannot be managed by the Los Angeles Police and Sheriffs Departments. Just another fascist move by Trump.

I lived in LA at the time the National Guard was deployed in 1992. Over 4,000 troops were deployed, including both National Guard and later U.S. Marines and Army troops.
At the time, it was at the request of the governor. The riots then were where to violent, businesses burned, a lot of damage caused, if you happened to be white and in the wrong area, there was danger to your life, although the violence affected people of many races.

The National Guard was federalized for civil unrest in LA, it was during the Rodney King riots in April 1992.
That was the most recent previous instance of federal National Guard activation in LA.

    Deployment Timeline:

    1. April 29, 1992 – Riots began after the verdicts in the Rodney King trial.

    2. April 30, 1992 – Governor Pete Wilson requested the California National Guard be activated.

    3. the Same day, President George H. W. Bush signed an executive order to federalize the National Guard troops under Title 10, making them part of the federal military command structure.

    4. Over 4,000 troops were deployed, including both National Guard and later U.S. Marines and Army troops.

I just doubled checked and you're right. None of the people burning cars, raiding and looting businesses, creating no-go zones for open air criminal activity, breaking the sidewalks to use the rubble as projectiles, pelting police officers with rocks, throwing rocks off of highway overpasses onto vehicles below, assaulting counterprotesters, blowing the cover of FBI agents tracking a murderer or breaching a police headquarters are wearing red hats.

Therefore, it's not destruction. Nothing of the kind. It's peaceful protest.

If one watched the “protests” yesterday, there was twice as many city police than protesters. True that there was some destruction the first day but LA is huge and there are plenty of police to call up. Which they did.

This is bullshit. No one is denying that there's been some destruction of property. But posts like this exaggerate the matter to a ridiculous level, with that idiot in the White House jumping in opportunitically to make it worse, which is his entire objective.

It will be interesting to see his reaction to the other protests breaking out in other cities across the country.
