I received a notice today from Sheffield Hallam University that I had received a Post Graduate Certificate in History: Imperialism and Culture. I took two of the required modules before withdrawing to complete the MAT program at West Alabama which will be better for my long term goals.

This Certificate was totally unexpected. But I will soon have it on my resume, thats for sure. Perhaps someday I can go back and complete the whole program, which I was enjoying very much. (As an aside, I am enjoying the MAT program, also).

So today I am a Post Grad Cert holder....

    feels good.

These things never happen to me!

But seriously, congratulations! That program always looked interesting to me.

How long to go on the MAT? Are MATs considered terminal? What are the doctoral options for MAT holders?

    Thanks.

As to the MAT, I really haven't given it much thought as to future doctoral work, though I suppose that is an option.

When I began the program, I was intending on being in Estonia for a few more years, but now I am returning very soon. So perhaps doctoral work is more of an option for me now.

The MAT is a Master of Arts in Teaching, so I doubt it would be considered terminal, but simply on par with a regular MA.

    I think.

The MAT would normally be considered a terminal degree.

Another consideration would be whether it requires a thesis.

No thesis required for the MAT w/o Cert from UWA. It is a 33 semester hour degree. I wouldn't think it would compare to a MFA or other terminal Masters.

Would the MAT be considered terminal or entry level professional?

I'd not put it on a level with the MA as a PhD feeder degree -- seems to me it might be able to feed an EdD but the lack of academic research in the typical MAT (and substantial practical experience component) would (IMHO) not prepare one well for PhD work...

    Just a few thoughts....

I always knew that at least one poster around here was certifiable.
Now we know who it is.
Corn-gratulations, Clint, and good luck with your MAT.

I don't know for sure if one is absolutely forbidden to get into a doctoral program with a nonthesis master's, but it can quite often be a tough sell.

There are a number of PhD programs out there (in English anyway) that allow a person with only a BA to enter. If that is the case, I would think it is possible.

But, for me, that is down the road anyway.
