It seems like you aren’t actually paying attention. The only thing MAGA has to offer is hatred, vengeance, division, lies, chaos, gaslighting, and destruction. If you want to know where Democrats stand and their policies, here it is straight from the source. https://democrats.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/FINAL-MASTER-PLATFORM.pdf

Here’s some of the bullet points for the Democrat Party.

    National Debt:
    • Raise taxes on billionaires and big companies

    • Let Medicare negotiate drug prices to save money

    • Crack down on tax cheats (especially rich ones)

They want to raise revenue instead of cutting Social Security or defense.
    Homelessness:
    • Funded emergency housing and rental help

    • Push cities to change zoning so more housing can be built

    • Focus on “housing first,” then add mental health or addiction support
    Urban Crime:
    • More money for local police and training

    • Community programs to stop violence before it starts

    • Mental health teams to handle crisis calls instead of just cops
    Fentanyl/Meth Crisis:
    • Record drug seizures at the border

    • Free Narcan to prevent deaths

    • More addiction treatment

    • Pressure on China and Mexico to stop fentanyl chemicals

Speaking of paying attention, the person you're talking to is definitely not MAGA.

A good chunk of these policies are very weak attempts at a solution and not that different from republicans. A few also play into Republican lies and fears, which a competent democratic party should be able to avoid falling prey to.

National debt argument comes up anytime a Democrat is in the whitehouse, but seems to no longer be an issue after they leave. Republicans yet again are showing this is not a concern for them by passing Trump’s bill. Democrats have consistently reduced deficit spending while republicans increase it. Increasing taxes on the wealthy by a percent or two wont help much when most of the wealth in stocks and other prospective sources. Biden also said he would go after tex cheats, but it didnt happen. Mind you alot of rich and powerful tax cheats are in politics or closely connected with establishment politicians.

This help for homelessness is just a “market” solution. Built more housing and hope the market will fix it. That hasn't worked and it was the republicans solution in 2020 as well when Trump ran on a deregulation platform. Fixing homelessness requires more than making more luxury condos, it also means addressing the economic issues.

For urban crime, crime is down in most places in the US and continues to drop. This is another scare tactic by republicans. Dems solution is to increase police funding is making this no different than republican policy. We spend more on police than every other industrialized nation and get worse results. Another failed, reactionary policy. I do like training of mental health professionals, but reduction in crime almost always is a result of addressing the underlying economic and social factors that lead to it.

The drug crisis also ties into the cost of living crisis and lack of affordable healthcare, both things they dont fully address. Also the last point about China and Mexico is right out of the Trump playbook. The problem is the US has a huge demand for these drugs. It sounds like another War on Drugs.

Actually, he did and it was happening. What he did was increase the IRS investigators numbers. This allowed them to go after the rich. The problem with the tax return for the rich is that it's extremely complicated, compared to a salaried employee, and takes research to understand. DOGE fired them as one of their first moves. The rich folks know that the IRS doesn't have the man power to check their returns so it encourages more cheating.

After mass firings, the IRS is poised to close audits of wealthy taxpayers, agents say
The upheaval undermines the agency’s quest to tackle high-end tax cheating.

Touché. I dont know to what extent they would actually charge tax cheats, but I am all for it. I think things like this should be done regardless of the debt.

You might be surprised how much we agree on a lot of this.

I agree that the Republicans are grossly hypocritical on the national debt, but that doesn't mean it's not a serious issue. And that's doubly so when the Trump administration is now actively undermining the U.S. dollar's role in international trade. At this point I think of it kind of like climate change, in that it's clear that policymakers won't really care about this until it's too late, so the best move is to preemptively adapt as well as one can.

Were the tax code drastically simplified, and if the IRS were switch from requiring taxpayers to file to simply sending taxpayers an invoice or a check and letting them appeal as needed, then this sort of thing would be a lot easier to manage. But that would be actual reform, and well, we can't have that.

Letting markets build more housing is a big part of the solution to the housing crisis, but I agree that when it comes specifically to homelessness that it's not that big a part of the solution, which has to revolve around addiction treatment and other mental health services. One of the challenges is that with certain types of addiction, like meth, even when there's access to treatment, once someone has gone down that road there's just not a lot of hope for recovery. I don't think anyone really has the solution for that. Maybe a Manhattan Project to come up with new treatments for the most gripping addictions?

Agreed, generally. Although unfortunately, a few progressive prosecutors in major cities have made Democrats as a whole look like they won't tackle crime, so it's not surprising their national platform is so hawkish.

Agreed. After half a century of the expensive and illiberal failed War on Drugs, any approach to drug abuse that still focuses on interdiction and heavy-handed law enforcement is actively idiotic.

Oh, it is mildly entertaining to watch but in a way, all this focus on Epstein, which in the end can do no more than show Trump for being what we pretty much knew all along he is, takes attention away from the reality of what he's been doing lately.

Many Americans don't care what he's been doing. A chunk are actively cheering it. If the Epstein focus at least gets some heat on Trump, good on the Democrats for focusing on the one issue that actually seems to be hurting Trump with his base.

I would argue it also keeps Trump and his cabinet’s attention away from doing more harmful things.

I think the best thing about the Epstein kerfuffle is that it weakens Trump hold on some of the MAGA base. A big part of Trump's power comes from his threats against Republican congressmen and senators. The more that his power is weakened the sooner that Trump will become a true lame duck President.
