I am planning to package and brand a product. I just want to know the procedure of getting a brand name. Which department need to be contacted and the procedure.
    Any help will be helpful.

I'd guess that it has something to do with establishing a trademark. If you did a google search using that term as a keyword you might find some helpful information. BTW, whatcha making/selling?

That would be the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). Their Web site can be found here. What you want to do is file for a trademark. You might also want to do that at the state level as well, but a national trademark gives you the greatest protection.

I forgot to mention that perhaps the most involved part of the process the extensive research that must be done prior to filing an application. You must ascertain that the trademark you wish to file does not infringe on any other existing trademarks. There are many firms that specialize in conducting these searches, but I suggest you do as much of the preliminary search (there are some good Internet tools to do this) as possible as these firms charge for each trademark they research. As it may take several attempts (searches for different names) before you find one that is freely available, it can get quite expensive. Moreover, I might also suggest contacting a good attorney. There are some that specialize only in trademarks, and, for a flat fee, can offer you a complete package (search, filing, etc.).
