    Bruce,

I like to learn something new every day - what kind of six-figure job has OT?

In the US - normal load for a state-supported institution is 3-4 classes per semester.

    YMMV - especially for for-profits.

  4. I'm not Bruce, but: The average Criminal Investigator in the Federal government, with 5-6 years on, earns in the neighborhood of $100K after inclusion of the 25% availability pay that most agents receive (essentially straight-time for the 10 additional "unscheduled" hours per week we average.) Pre-scheduled overtime is rare, but is usually paid at time and one-half.

It's only six figures with the OT. A Patrolman on nights (night differential) with a Master's degree has a base salary of over $80,000, and it's not difficult to top 100K. With mandatory court time and training time, it's actually difficult to not go over 100K.

I have been teaching online for five years as my full time job. I taught in f2f classrooms for 25 years and now I work from home. In any given year, I teach for 5-10 institutions. I teach graduate and undergraduate courses as well as online faculty training for two institutions. I make far more $$ than I did teaching in public schools or as a full time college instructor. I am paid as an employee and do not accept 1099 work. I take care of my own health insurance and retirement and have found good deals on both. I do not have a doctorate yet, and although none of my teaching positions require a doctorate, I am working on that at the present time.

The institutions are all on different schedules; some are 8 wks, some are 10 or 11 wks, and some are full 16 wk semesters. Along with my masters degree, I have graduate courses in other areas. I teach in several subject areas and that obviously means more opportunities than if I only had credentials to teach in one subject area.

I teach year round and that is the only disadvantage to full time online teaching but the upside is that I can work from anywhere -- and I do. I travel when and where I please -- taking my work with me, of course.
