OK - that tuition at Clovis really blew me away. I also checked the online class schedules to make sure that what I think I need to take (while I wait for my transcripts to arrive there) will actually be offered online - and (gulp) I took the plunge! I'm now a student (starting in the summer session) of Clovis Community College.

Too bad I didn't find out about this sooner. I would have saved lots in loans.

My plan is to get my GPA back up to where I had it before - either one or two semesters (3.89 in a scale of 4.0). Then I'll apply to a few schools (locally) in the hopes of getting scholarship money. If not, I'll still have plenty of options...

Thanks to everyone for their help. This board is terrific!!

I'm starting with Bio w/lab and a 2 credit class that fulfills their "phys ed" requirement: Fundamentals of Physical Well Being. The description says that the class will "acquaint students with the benefits and values of fitness, health and wellness in our daily lives". (sounds great, esp. right now since I'm up at 4:30 am in pain, lol). I actually could take a 3 credit class for the same price, but haven't been able to find something that will apply towards the degree (I have loads of electives already).

I'm excited! Very happy - feel like I'm finally back on track. Well, let's see if I say this while I'm studying biology (I've been more of a humanities sort of student).

If I can get my GPA up to 3.5, then I'm eligible for a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship to take the first three required classes before enrollment at Harvard Extension. I would apply at Tufts & maybe B.U., also (depending on available scholarship $$ too), provided I feel as though I could handle getting to classes. (although they have online classes too) If I can't get scholarships, then I'll look into others - maybe testing out of the rest of my needed credits & then going on to getting my Masters or PhD.

Thank you - I love the Annenberg videos. I'll check it out. Been starting to panic over it already.

If you are taking Bio for Gen Ed with Lab - relax. Larry Powell, the course instructor, has extensive notes with his assignments. Your labs will be with materials you find around the house.

My 2 oldest children took the course and enjoyed it!

Oh, thank you!! That's terrific to hear - it's actually Human Bio w/lab, but Larry Powell is teaching it. Makes a world of difference if the instructor is good, believe me.

Now I'm just waiting for Clovis to receive my financial aid. I think they'll receive notice w/in a week.

I'm looking forward to this very happy spot during a time that is plagued with (all in their senior yrs) people in my life who have serious illnesses - and one (so far) death of a friend. Seems to be a tough time out in the world, and closer to home, right now.

Since you mention a senior citizen discount, I thought I'd mention that AARP also has college scholarships. Student loans are the pits!

Also, I'm curious how one takes a bio with lab course via DL... Do they send you things to dissect on your kitchen table??? :)

    Good post!

I spend a lot of time researching myself. Looking at all the choices out there will drive you crazy. It will also burn a lot of time. Sad part is, I kind of like it. Maybe I can be the next Dr. Bear.

:eek:Arrggh! I'm not a senior citizen YET!!

That's a dirty word to many of us baby boomers - I'm oldER than other students...oldER!

I briefly signed up for an online Bio class w/lab at my community college a while ago, but chickened out and withdrew from it. The labs were basically done with common household ingredients that are easy to obtain.

Forgot to thank you - I will check out AARP (as an oldER person :D ). I also get notices from FastWeb about scholarships, too. Haven't applied for any because my GPA took a real nose-dive... however, I intend to change that.

    Older but wiser. :D

It sounds like you are developing a good plan to get your AA and get your GPA back into scholarship eligible range. You'll get there!

    Yes! :D

That's my plan - as long as good ol' Murphy stays far away from me (w/his stupid laws).

    Undergraduate Degree Plan Help

    Hi Lynn!

I'm not sure how many credits would transfer, but have you looked into American Public University?

Here's a link to their transfer credit info: Military Transfer Credit | Earn Credit for Military Training and Experience

They're not just for the military, they offer programs for civilians too.

APU offers more than 70 online degrees, and they're accredited.

Just a thought, and I hope it helps!

yeah the massachusetts thing really bites.....if you notice, they also give tuition "waivers" as scholarships....but waiving the $25 tuition isn't that big of a reward when you still must pay the $125 fee per credit hour on top of it!

Yep - the cost is unbelievable. I think they have it figured out how to grab every penny of the federal grants, so to even get books, loans are needed.

I'm enrolled with Clovis Community College (starting w/the summer session very soon) to finish my A.A. The difference in cost is phenomenal.
