I just wanted to say hi. I have been a long time reader of this forum and it has helped many times. I ran across one of DR Bear's books some 10 years ago and after adequate motivation, I got my nursing degree through Excelsior. I am now finishing my BA through TESC and have applied for a mostly distance MSN through Frontier School. I just wanted to finally sign up and thank everyone.

BTW, I have 2 kids and a stay at home wife and now I have her pursuing her Associates through Penn Foster (don't worry , she is aware of the possible utility problems, don't really need to worry since she has no plans to work :)

Welcome. Glad that one of my books was helpful to you. Frontier sounds like a splendid place, and was quite unknown to me till now.

Could you say a little something about the state and future of midwifery? An old friend, who has been a midwife for 20+ years, has recently walked away from it, rather petulantly . . . fed up, she says, of the ongoing frustrations of dealing with the the 'traditional' medical community in her rural California town. It seems such a shame, and I wonder if this is a common phenomenon or an isolated case.

    Midwifery

I have applied to the Family Nurse Practioner program at Frontier. www.midwives.org Their original (and main) focus is on the Midwife though.

In the area I live midwives are virtually non-existant. I think MDs have done a good job of establishing domination in OB/GYN. We had one birthing center open a few years ago, but it was closed within 6 months. None of the local hospitals support or use midwives in my area.

I know only one and she actually had to go back and become a family nurse practioner as well to find any work. I would suspect that midwives would be employable (or able to start their own practices) in rural areas that didn't have ob/gyn docs OR in more progressive areas where women wanted to have a home or "birthing center" birth rather than a hospital birth.

BTW, it took buying your book 3 times before I finally signed up with Excelsior. Why 3 times you ask? Everytime I loaned it to someone, they would pass it to someone else etc. I know several people who now have degrees because of this.

I just received a pm from a forum administrator in regards to my post above. My post was just for fun. Relax madam administrator. It was in response to a post made by Go_Fishy. I was being silly.

And I was being nice because ratback5 is a new member; I always appreciate a friendly welcome when I am new to a board.

The 678910 was because the board engine doesn't permit messages under 10 characters. I understand that this looks may appear like spam and apologize for the confusion. [IMG]

    Midwives

    Dr. Bear,
We see similar here in SC with Midwives. Midwives are not really used in the local hospitals. There was a private birthing center that opened last year, but they only lasted about 6 months. I could see midwives in areas that either don't have MDs for OB/GYN OR that cater to the homebirth/birthing center (water births, etc) crowd.

I only know of one midwife in our area that still practices as a midwife. She had to go back and become a Nurse Practioner to get the hospital to allow her in AND she cannot be in practice by herself, she has to be in a physician group.
I am actually applying for the Family Nurse Practioner program at www.midwives.org. I delivered a few babies as a paramedic and that was enough for me.
