Is anyone watching the "Rome" series on HBO? I've been extremely excited about it for months, and the show has mostly been fulfilling my very high expectations for it. It has quite good English actors, like "I, Claudius" (although not quite as good as "I, Claudius") plus really massive amounts of sex and violence and a real budget for scenery and extras.

As it comes to historical accuracy, the creators take a few liberties but mostly follow documented events surrounding the rise of Julius Caesar and the end of the Republic. I've become addicted to reading the "Geekvs Romanvs" thread on televisionwithoutpity.com where historical accuracy is carefully nitpicked.

One of the great things about the show is that they depict the use of colors in the Roman world, so the scenery is gorgeous. All those movies that show tons of white marble statues and white walls everywhere are totally inaccurate, since the Romans were fond of bright colors and painted absolutely everything, including statues... ancient Rome would really have looked more like a town in Mexico or India.

I highly recommend it for classical enthusiasts... just don't watch it with the kids.

  2. I would LOVE to be watching it, but my wife doesn't care for "Italian Horse Operas" which is the category to which she assigns anything to do with guys wearing helmets, short skirts, and greaves.....

Sounds wonderful. Maybe I'll pick it up on DVD sometime when she's out of town.
