Why do most DL schools not require any entrance test like the GRE, GMAT, etc?

    Greetings.

I believe (???) that,a DL program/course that has lax entrance/pre-requisit requirements does so on the theory that an inept DL student cannot adversely affect his classmates in the way that he could in a B&M school. For example, a clueless student in a traditional school might interfere with the progress of his classmates either by constantly asking questions, weeping uncontrollably <g>, etc. How well or poorly a student in an "Independent Study" course is doing does not in any way affect his cohorts.

Rather than ask why DL schools less frequently have ridged entrance requirements, a better question might be why do they have entrance requirements (other than being able to pay the tuition fee) at all.

    Cordially,
    Richard Kanarek

P.S. My comments were about undergraduate study.

Not sure which schools or programs you are looking at but many have the same graduate standards and will link you to the graduate admissions information. Although I agree with Richard regarding his rationale for the input one has on the group. However many DL programs are cohort based (graduate). Also, many DL programs are geared for older adults who have been out of school for a period of time. The use it or lose theory really applies when trying to remember skills/lessons not used in daily life in an effort to get the appropriate score for the school of choice.

Richard, you echo my sentiment on admissions tests at all. Performance during the first few courses will determine success.

There are BM grad schools which do not require the GRE for some graduate programs. Two examples are Queens College (CUNY) and Touro College in NY. In general, I think the answer is obvious; standarized tests are a means of awarding a limited number of openings at a school to the best ( or perhaps most likely to succeed) candidates. DL schools have a nearly unlimited capacity to teach.
