I am looking forward to have a Masters scholarship in USA. I am an engineer, you advise me to take GRE General test or GRE subject test ?

Take the GRE General Test. Pretty much any graduate school that wants a GRE Subject Test will also want a GRE General Test or other exam such as the GMAT or LSAT, but not the other way around.

I think just the individual subject tests are good for undergrad credit, and only at the three schools: Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College, and Empire State College. I remember reading on the ETS site they advise against using the GRE General exam for credit. On page seven of the ETS Guide to use of scores it says:

"Subject test scores may be considered for the award of undergraduate credit only in the field of the test and only when a rationale has been developed that discusses the relationship between GRE Subject test scores and the amount of credit awarded. This rationale must be made available to users of any transcripts that contain credit awarded in this manner."

And listed under Inappropriate Uses it says:

    1. Requirement of a minimum score on the GRE General Test for conferral of a degree, credit-by-examination, advancement to candidacy, or any noneducational purpose.

Here's the link if you want to read it yourself:http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/GRE/pdf/gre_0809_guide.pdf

So, these things lead me to think that the General GRE isn't worth any undergrad credit anywhere, although please correct me if anyone knows better. These are just guidelines after all, and colleges don't always go by that.

    Hope this helps!

I have never heard of anyone getting college credit for the general GRE exam, only the subject GRE exams.

Well it says that GRE general tests can't be "REQUIRED" for credit by exam. It does not mean that a college can't award you credits on its own discretion.

    Which GRE?

    For Engadnan,

For US graduate programs, many would require a minimum score in the general GRE; assuming that you're pursuing engineering, the math score would probably be more crucial than the verbal score.

As to whether you ought to also take the GRE subject exam in engineering, I would say that you would be wise to look at the requirements for individual schools to which you are applying and their criteria for granting scholarships.

Obviously, your grades in your undergrad program will likely also have some bearing on both admission and scholarship decisions.

As others have mentioned, I don't believe any graduate program grants credit for [/I]any[/I] GRE exam. I am also unaware of any undergraduate program which grants credit for the GRE general exam. There are at least two undergrad assessment colleges which award credit for GRE subject exams (Charter Oak and Excelsior); another poster has mentioned that Empire State also awards such credit (I was unaware of the last one).

Whichever exam(s) you end up pursuing, be sure to give ample time for studying. Personally, I found the Princeton Review books for these to be the most helpful.

    Peace,

    Matt
