I have an interest in photography also but I'm curious as to why you think that the course/certificate should be free.

Just go to learn your own through YouTube Videos. Once you're mastered the the skills...then email me. I'll print a nice copy of the certificate with my signature as well. I'll put the Board of Trustee include. "Dr. Randell, Dr. Shawn A., Dr. Bear, Dr. Me Again" and etc... Similar MUST University, I'll be the President, Dean, Instructor, Administrative Staff, except I am not the Bursar (Credit Card Processor) 'cause it is FREE for you.

There are lots of good resources for learning photography online--both with and without a certificate.

The website you guys mentioned with the free photography courses is WAY out of date, text-only, and as far as I understand does NOT give certificates at the end of the "course." However, there are surely some other free photography courses available. You might look at the New York Institute of Photography to get a certificate, though.

As a matter of full disclosure, my company offers certificates for our online photography classes, but as you can see from my post I understand that choosing an online education platform is not one-size-fits-all. I understand that some people may be a better fit for a paid course from my company OR other companies, and others may find good info for free on the web.

I've found that any courses I take that are free have just enough information to get me frustrated. Check out this great website that has several 'learn at home' photography courses. Yes, you have to pay, but you will actually learn how to use your camera and take great pictures. LearnPhotographyAtHome.com | Be Proud of Your Pictures

From Harvard Extension - Digital Photography course, free but no certificate. $2,000 if you want to earn credit. Best freebie I ever downloaded - and I have drawers full of lectures! https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/harvard-extension-schools/id377972080

There is also a non I-tunes link but I couldn't find it again on short notice. Prof. Dan Armendariz is a gifted teacher!

Here's a non I-tunes link for those free Harvard Extension Digital Photography lectures. There are probably a couple of others.

    Validity of Education

Even if such a course did exist, any diploma or certificate given out by a free photography course isn't going to mean anything.

There's a difference between trying to get a good deal and trying to get something from nothing. As you might have heard, "there's no such thing as a free lunch."

There is plenty of video out there, though, put out by people who have their own reasons for doing so. And not all of it is amateur. B&H Photography itself has its own set of training videos that is pretty good. Adorama has videos that can be useful, too.

Of course, once you're willing to put down even a little money, the selection goes way up from there. If you want credit, I'd suggest going to a college course. Even a local or community college.

On the other hand, the internet can offer tons of content over a wide range of subjects for a low price, since it can reach out to such a wide audience.

In fact, there are all sorts of courses that I have access to that are basically "free" to me now.

What I mean is, by just being interested in and buying one course, I then had access to 100s of classes by world class photographers at no extra cost. This extraordinary service is available at PhotographyOnlineCourses.net

Wherever you go, just look for something that fits your needs.

Thank you for your answers guys, I have been checking out on Google as well as the few links given but I am not sure any of these could help out.
    Sincerely,

    Ambrosia

I took the Harvard free Digital Photography course - and later I paid $600 for another photography course, just to have a diploma to hang on the wall. The free Harvard course was SO much better than the paid one ... no comparison. The paid-for diploma looks nice -- and I've stopped telling people (except you guys) about the free Harvard course. Many simply refuse to believe that a school like Harvard would give courses away -even without credit. Sad.

They don't believe me? SO WHAT! I always have some really nice pictures I can show 'em! They can't argue with those!

PS - the Harvard course is still available: http://tv.digitalphotography.exposed/2011/fall/

Both courses did what they were supposed to.

The free Harvard course made me a better photographer.
The paid-for course sent me my diploma promptly, after I finished all the reading, assignments and tests.

What to take? Depends what you want.
