No, but I think it's fun to write, "Holy thread necromancy, Batman! A xxxx year old thread!"

In my case, I think the answer is 'yes'.
I did several of the online computer-related courses from the Alison people last year. I found the link here at Degree Info.

I couldn't afford to buy the certificates or diplomas, as I was unemployed at the time. But one course (only one: Microsoft Digital Literacy - IT Basics, Internet & Productivity Programs) came with a free downloadable certificate.

And that certificate did actually help me get a job.

Well, I think it helped me get an interview - I remember that the HR dude specifically asked me about it during the interview, while perusing the print-out of the certificate I'd included with my C.V.

It wasn't the only reason I got the job, but the cert. came up favourably in the interview, so I think it had a positive effect.

(I like to think my witty banter, debonair style, and million-dollar smile actually got me the job, rather than a free certificate. But it was probably the certificate.)

Anyway, thanks Degree Info, and thankyou Michael Gates for this really great list of courses.

    Hi Everyone,

In my case, the answer is 'yes'.

I did several computer-related courses from the Alison people last year (I found the link here on Degree Info, although it seems to have been moved or deleted now).

I could not afford to buy the diplomas and certificates, as I was unemployed at the time. But there was one computer course (only one) that came with a free, downloadable certificate: Microsoft Digital Literacy - IT Basics, Internet & Productivity Programs. And the actual certificate doesn't look too bad either.

I included the certificate with my C.V. on several job applications, as well as info about the other free certificate courses I had done (but no certificates for them).

Strangely, it was not only the free Microsoft Digital Literacy certificate that got attention at interviews. I also completed the ALISON ABC IT - Computer Training Suite course, and this was the one that was discussed at two of the three interviews I attended.

At the first interview, the interviewer was curious about ABC IT - Computer Training Suite course (for which I could not afford to buy a certificate) and I remember she said something like: "Ah, that must be similar to the XXX certification". I think it does pretty much equate with that particular (much more expensive - as in NOT FREE) qualification, so I agreed.

At the second interview, although again it was only a minor part of the conversation, the HR dude was quite positive about all the free certificate courses. He completely ignored my degree and the other (mainly language-related) swish-looking hard-copy certificates that cost me money as well as effort in previous years, and asked me about the Microsoft Digital Literacy certificate and the ABC IT - Computer Training Suite course, where I got them and how I got them.

I was offered a job by both these companies and took the second one (it offered higher pay and was more in line with what I had done previously).

I am not pretending that a couple of free courses got me the job offers, but I'm sure they did help. The courses and the certificate were mentioned positively by the interviewers at two of the three interviews I attended. TPerhaps they were discussed because they were novel, but never the less, they showed I had completed studies that were relevant to the positions I was applying for. And now I am employed.

So yes, I think free certificates can have significant value for your resume.

I am pretty sure the free certificates (both the single print-out and the 'invisible' ones) I got and added to my C.V. were significant in my getting my current job.

    Cheers,
    Pete

A friend of mine is studying psychology with a concentration in mental health, and she would love to be able to do a cert or 2 for free to boost her resume. Anyone know of any?

Hypnosis and Motivation Institute. Confession: This is one of my Alma matters. Accredited by the DLTC, ACCET and others.

Introductory Certificate is free. It's a "lead in"/"teaser" for the full diploma, which I frankly found to be worth the cost. But this thread is about the Free stuff.

These Classes are also free, but I do not believe they come with certs at this time.
