So after starting my program I was asked if I wanted to join fraternity which is not something I'm familiar with being an online student. Neither of my undergraduate schools (both B&M and online) had fraternities or sororities that I am aware of, so I was taken off guard when I was asked to join Delta Mu Delta.

What are the benefits? Networking would be my first guess but I guess my only knowledge regarding fraternities is what I can remember from the movies back in the 1980's which seem more like an avenue to party, drink, and get into shenanigans.

Another thing that confuses me is that my college supposedly banned fraternities due to hazing back in the day.

I attended online for undergraduate, but I joined the fraternity. I belonged to this one:

Delta Mu Delta is an "honor society" -- not a "fraternity". They aren't the same thing, although both types of organizations are commonly named using Greek letters. Frats (and sororities) are typically social organizations at universities, while honor societies typically recognize academic achievement at universities.

Many schools have banned fraternities. I doubt that any school has banned honor societies.

As CalDog says, Not a fraternity. Delta Mu Delta is an academic honor society. Except for the fact that they're organizations with college chapters and Greek-letter names, totally different things. Delta Mu Delta is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is affiliated with the ACBSP; there are sister honor societies for AACSB and for otherwise-accredited schools.

I think there are occasional vanity academic honor societies, but this one isn't.

Indeed, honor society chapters have advisors from the faculty, departments put out enthusiastic bulletins when a chapter of the honor society in their field is formed at their school, etc.

Typically, membership in an honor society means that you are academically above-average in your program, as measured by things like GPA or class rank. So it's something that you can put on a resume. It looks good, just like graduating with honors looks good.

In contrast, membership in a fraternity doesn't signify anything in terms of academic achievement, and so it probably wouldn't go on your resume. If you had some kind of leadership role at the frat, and gained managerial experience that way, then you could arguably list it on a resume. But the same would be true for any other campus club or organization that you belonged to.

University faculty and administrators typically approve of Greek-letter student organizations that promote scholastic achievement. For some reason, they tend to be less supportive of Greek-letter student organizations that promote the consumption of Heineken.

Heineken? You clearly had a more upscale undergraduate experience than I did!

Heineken deserves special mention because of their extensive "smart bottle" research & development efforts, aimed specifically at enhancing the frat party experience:

I'm not sure that's great salesmanship for the honor society, there.
