Its been a long time coming - now, if somehow we could have the old ones rescinded! EDUCAUSE TO CONTROL .EDU DOMAIN NAMES EDUCAUSE <http://www.educause.edu>, the not-for-profit university technology consortium, has been appointed the keeper of the .edu domain name suffix. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced 11 April that EDUCAUSE will take official responsibility for registering and managing .edu names, which have been mostly restricted until now to four-year colleges and universities in the United States. EDUCAUSE plans to allow other community colleges access to the .edu domain while still protecting its integrity and reputation. In addition to processing applications for .edu domain names under established rules, EDUCAUSE will also create "a public process through which changes in these rules can be prepared, discussed, and recommended to the Department of Commerce."
