I just checked the FEMA website, seems like I would not be able to get credits from them as they cater to US citizens only...I am not! I AM CANADIAN....

FEMA EMI Courses & IS Courses

I am new to this forum and have read all the FEMA-EMI threads with interest. There is much time that I could spend on this however, I will make only a few points.

    1) FEMA-EMI "G" series or classroom courses are taught at EMI in addition to training centers at each state's emergency management agency. You can get college credit for these at several RA colleges. Clackamas Community College is one since that school has an AAS Degree in Emergency Management. If you are not in an emergency management degree program it decreases the possibility of getting college credit.

    2) FEMA-EMI "IS" series or independent study courses are available on the web or through the mail. Yes, you can breeze right thru them and look up the answers. Some can take more than 2 hours though. Clackamas CC and several other RA schools will give you credit for these without the Frederick CC if you are enrolled in an emergency management degree program, almost always an AAS and in some instances a Bachelors. Some may insist on the Frederick CC transcript regardless.

    3) The original intention of FEMA G and IS series courses has been to "professionalize" the emergency management workforce and not specifically academically educate the said workforce. These count towards the FEMA PDS and APS certifications. Very recently the PDS series has gone exclusively independent study. The APS series is all by G series and not all of the classes have been offered so far except at EMI in residence. FEMA eventually did realize the importance of academic degrees hence the FEMA higher education project wheras the courses can now be used for college credit in emergency management degree programs.

    4) Emergency management in academia is a fairly new concept it has not been around forever like sociology or chemistry. Due to this there are not an abundance of degree programs. Due to 911 more have been implemented and more are added every year. In the past most that had a degree working in the field majored in environmental science or public administration. I have yet to locate one PhD program primarily in emergency management. In many cases I can tell you that work experience and a significant amount of FEMA G and IS courses are valued over a degree in the emergency management by many that are involved in hiring decisions. And of course I dont totally agree with that. There are not a significant amount of practitioners in this field that hold a degree. I feel that there has to be a balance between college education, work experience, and training. I already have the degree so I have completed many G and IS series courses to achieve that balance after my degree to be more "suitable" in the eyes of the hiring manager.

Hope I was of some help. Questions or comments please advise...

This decision of WIU's was not appealed, but evidently WIU changed its mind spontaneously (or else there is imperfect coordination among its staff). The WIU online transcript now says:

    FREDERICK CMTY COLLEGE
    SUMMER 2003
EMER PROG MNGR GEN ELEC 1.0

Excelsior College gives "Applied Professional" credit for most of them, but gives "Humanities" credit for at least one: "IS-242 Effective Communication".
