I am looking for an external BA in Spanish, with the ultimate goal of becoming teacher certified. I already have a BA in Music Business. I am also in the military, and staying at one place long enough to finish a degree is next to impossible. The ability to use my military tuition assistance would be a strong plus as well....

    Thanks for any info!

I see in the subject index to Bears' Guide that this should be possible at Charter Oak (non-resident), Mary Baldwin (short residency), as well as schools in the UK, Australia, and South Africa.

    Dear Lil,

    Hi, there!

In addition to the excellent recommendations posted by Dr. John Bear, I can add:

    1) A Bachelor of Arts with a major in Foreign Language (Spanish) from Thomas Edison State College.

    2) A Bachelor of Arts/Liberal Arts with a concentration in World Languages and Literature (Spanish) from Excelsior College.

You might also want to consider registering for Latin American studies since you can include Spanish language and literature classes as part of your degree. Alternatively, you might consider studying for a certificate only. If it is so, please E-mail me.

If you already know Spanish, we shouldn't oversee the degrees offered by the University of Barcelona in Spain. As far as I know, they offer the best degrees at a distance in "Formación de Profesores de Español como Lengua Extranjera" ("Training of Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language"). This gives you solid preparation to teach Spanish all over Europe and, conceivably, in the United States.

For specific certification issues, please E-mail me or post a question to Tom Nixon who is our expert in teacher certification issues.

    My best regards,

    Greetings Fellow Service Member,

You might find some useful information at the following URL:
    http://voled.doded.mil/dantes/ttt/

This is the Department of Defense's "Troops to Teachers" page on the DANTES website. Among other things, the DANTES Troops to Teachers office is designed to "help applicants identify...programs leading to certification...." I assume that, since DOD gave the ball to the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support, they expect to be able to help service members find DL programs in their areas of interest. I heard recently that one of the major goals of the program is to help teachers get certified in foreign languages, an area where there is apparently a scarcity of qualifed teachers.

A question: Do you already speak Spanish? From a linguistics point of view, it would be extremely difficult for *most* people to become proficient (listening, speaking, reading, writing) enough in a foreign language to teach it without:

    a. time spent with a good teacher; or
    b. time spent living in a country where the language is spoken; or
    c. marrying someone who speaks the language fluently.

Language is so different from most subjects and requires certain types of interactions that are not usually possible via distance (yet!). Learning a language can be difficult enough under the best of circumstances.

I do speak the language, although probably not exactly "fluently." My wife is a native Panamanian, and we speak about 90% Spanish in our house. So it's either sink or swim for me! I would learn a lot more about the mechanics of the language through a degree, plus force myself to read more in Spanish...
