I'd like to ask this question to Lawrie Miller, but I couldn't find an email. But I'm sure many of you will be able to give reliable information.

On the website BA in 4 weeks (http://geocities.com/ba_in_4_weeks) Lawrie presents the Degree Manuals. The "General Bachelors Degree Manual" seems to work not just for Excelsior, but for TESC too.

The "Business Degree Manual" talks about Excelsior. Now comes my question: Can I follow the same instructions of this Business Degree Manual and get the B.S. in Business Administration from Thomas Edison State College instead? Does it work in the same way or those instructions are specifically for Excelsior College?

Another question that I have is regarding GPA. TESC does not calculate GPA. What is the implication of this, once I want to continue my studies at a masters level? Do you know what other universities do in this case? Does this complicate the process of admission into a masters program somewhere?

Do you know of any other manual specifically designed for TESC? (In case Lawrie's works just for Excelsior)

I'm learning more about Excelsior and TESC, and until now I'm feeling more inclined to join TESC to get the B.S. in Business Administration.

I'll be very grateful for any information!

My suggestion is to spend some time on the www.tesc.edu
web site and look at the *.PDF files there for each degree option.

That, along with Lawrie's site should give you the
background to plan out your academic goals. I prepared
a program that gave me the undergraduate background
for admission into either a graduate business program,
liberal arts, or even a seminary or two that I spoke with.

As to the GPA issue, while TESC does not track it,
you can estimate it on your own. The graduate school
will need an official transcript, and will also confirm the GPA.

Prior to completing my AA and BA at TESC, I contacted
roughly 10 - 12 graduate schools. NONE of them had a
problem with the GPA issue, as each of them stated that
final acceptance would be based on their review of my
    academic transcript.

My point is ... if you have a graduate school/program in mind
already, then pick up the telephone, email them, whatever
and ask specifically about this concern. Ask also as to any
specific undergrad courses NOW. This will save you time,
effort, and expense after you complete your BA/BS and allow
you direct entry into the graduate program of your choice.

    Great Info

Thank you Billy for your comments.

Everybody talks about the GPA thing at TESC, but I've never read anything saying how bad or how good this could be. From your information I now understand that this is no problem once you've been accepted into graduate school.

I'm checking the .PDF files that you recommended and I'm working on a comparison to see if it's possible to get the TESC B.S. in Business Administration just by "testing out," as it is possible at Excelsior according to Lawrie's "Business Degree Manual." I'm interested in the General Business program, I don't have an specific area of interest. I want to get an M.B.A., so I need just a couple of core classes that are required to get into an M.B.A program.

I'm also checking Amberton University (amberton.edu). It seems that they have a nice M.B.A. program for working adults for US$6.300. I wonder if anybody has good references about Amberton University.

    Thank you,

I have done extensive research on Amberton and their MBA program is on my short list. The course seem challanging as well as interesting. The school is RA and the price is right. I have spoke with admission on and number of occassions and have gotton nothing but postive feeling. It is worth taking a look at. The other schhol on my list is Touro University International.

    GPA and TESC

Hello, TESC will compute a GPA if it is made clear at least several months prior to graduation. I hope this helps you. Hille

    CLEP + DANTES + ECE = B.S. Business Administration

Ok, about the GPA I now see it's no problem. What I'm still trying to understand is if it's possible to get the B.S. in Business Administration from TESC taking the following tests. I asked TESC but received no response. According to Lawrie Miller these tests are enough for getting the Excelsior B.S. in General Business.

Do I need to be enrolled at Excelsior College to take Excelsior College Examinations (ECE)? Or I can use something like a credit bank system in this case? Does TESC accept ECE credits?

Is there a way to get the TESC B.S. in Business Administration just by "testing out"?

(Excelsior College B.S. in General Business "testing out.")

    Ricardo asks...

"Do I need to be enrolled at Excelsior College to take Excelsior College Examinations (ECE)?" NO. You may take all your exams (ECE, CLEP, DANTES) before enrolling if you wish; TESC might be more restrictive--I don't know.

Ricardo, you seem to have a workable plan before you already; go for it!

    ECE

    Thanks Orson!

Good to know about the ECE. I tried to find that info on the Excelsior website but I couldn't. How do you sign up for Excelsior College Examinations without being officially enrolled? How much do they cost? Where do you pay for the tests? If I'm not enrolled anywhere, where do the credits stay, in the Excelsior credit bank? In this case I have to pay that fee for using the credit bank, right?

A TESC representative told me that many students graduate just by testing out. The examinations that I already mentioned work perfectly for a B.S. in General Business at Excelsior. The TESC representative didn't tell me if those examinations will work towards their B.S. in Business Administration (General Management). I was comparing requirements from both colleges and it seems to me that there are some diferences. I really need to know this for sure because I don't want to take the wrong examinations. I'm now waiting for a more specific response from TESC.

I wish I could find someone who went through this process already!

Here is a really quick take on the tests needed. A couple areas were vague so I marked them ask TESC after enrolling. You have a lot to do before you worry about that however, so get on with it.

Also, for the areas that allow some leeway, your choice for the best test may well be different.

    Good luck,
    Tony

    Re: ECE

    Ricardo,

The only way to know for sure is to enroll and get your academic advisor to approve the curriculum you have selected. Both TESC and excelsior are reasonably flexible.

I picked TESC because I felt it advantaged portfolio and is actually a state college. If I were doing more testing, the advantage, in my mind, would be with Excelsior despite the other factors.

    Best wishes,

    David

    Ricardo,
I am also comparing Excelsior and TESC for a BS in Business Administration, in my case with the CIS or MIS concentration. It looks to me like TESC does have one class that can't be done by testing: "Managerial or Business Communications."

What are the pros and cons of the two schools? I am leaning towards TESC because it is a state college and my sense is that it would look better on a resume, although I really don't want to take anymore classes, if I can help it. Is TESC less well known than Excelsior is as an assessment college?

I want to thank everyone in this forum for all the information, I have been reading these boards since January, along with BA in 4 weeks. It took me 20 years to get an AS in Business, I think I'll have the BS within 6 months, easily.

FYI, I took my first CLEP, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, this week and got a 75. It was absolutely thrilling to walk out of there with 6 credits!

    Hello!

    Karen

For some reason I like TESC more than Excelsior. Thomas Edison State College, like you've mentioned, looks better on the resume. I agree with that. TESC seems better for me, but I don't exclude Excelsior in any way. I see Excelsior College as a very advanced college, but like Lawrie Miller said, the name "sucks."

"Managerial or Business Communications" is a problem, there's no way to test out. The course takes about 12 weeks, which is not a long time, but 1 week would be much better! Just for information take a look at this layout that I've created: http://www.geocities.com/businessdegree

    Portfolio

Hello, For Business Communication I would spin FEMA IS 240,242,243 into a portfolio. Those three courses have not been evaluated and would show a bulk of knowledge with a narrative. ( I would also include letters memos or any type of non-confidential material used in business and credited to the student seeking the credits.)*******Hille

    BYU M COM 320

BYU M COM 320 — Written Business Communication is a good one! I've taken a couple of BYU classes online and I believe it's possible to finish very fast.

One advantage I see is "No books Required For This Course." Usually at BYU books are costly. Just the price is a little bit expensive compared to CLEPs, $50 and TECEPs $150. But still is a good option!

I've taken BYU English 315 - Advanced Writing for the Social Sciences, I wonder if TESC would accept that since the course is almost the same compared to BYU M COM 320. Is TESC really flexible about it or they will want me to take their course?

Anthony, thanks for the tip on the BYU course for Business Comm. I'm interested in doing this as quickly as possible, fortunately my company pays for courses, so money isn't really a factor.

Ricardo, I also just noticed, on the TESC vs. Excelsior Business degree, that TESC requires 9 more business credits than Excelsior does, Excelsior has them as Arts & Sciences credits. I'm not sure there are enough tests available that count as business credits. Can you tell I *really* don't want to take classes!

Can anyone confirm that TESC will accept this course at BYU to satisfy the "Business or Managerial Communications" requirement for a BSBA?

Hi , I would post this question on the TESC website. Current and alumni sections seem available to anyone. You won't see it appear until Monday. Hille
