if the CLEP exams are PASS/FAIL, then how does Excelsior factor in those exams when calculating GPA?

when you get a transcript, what will the transcript show for those subjects? PASS ?

If I have 15 subjects where the transcript shows a grade of PASS, what will grad schools think about the quality of my education?

Excelsior will actually assign a letter grade to your CLEP score based on how well you did. For example, I scored a 67 on the Intro to Pyschology CLEP. I was awarded an "A", which would be 4 points towards my GPA.

CLEP tests themselves are neither pass/fail or graded. They merely measure the level of knowledge and assign a numerical assesment. ACE and the accepting school choose what level is passing or if they are graded. ACE makes a recommendation and the accepting school can choose to make the requirement higher or to not grant credit at all. Excelsior assigns grades to certain scores and you can find this info on their web site. Since CLEP changed their scoring system Excelsior has not yet assigned grading scores to all tests yet. Anyway I hope this helps some what. Good luck in your program.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your last question. With a degree from the big three it is clear that a person's education came from life experience not the class experience. Graduate schools will know this and you will need to show them why you'll be an asset to their school. What a degree from Excelsior with grading does is allow the school to check off the line that requires an RA degree with a certain gpa. Again good luck.

    grad school 3.0

Many grad. schools ask for a 3.0 gpa for admission. This sometimes can be gotten around if one has high GRE scores. or by taking classes at the grad. institution as a continuing ed. student and doing well (getting A's). Getting A's as a part time student at the institution proves you can do well.
    All the best!

I don't agree that this is the case; it differs with each person. Many people use these schools to consolidate credits from numerous schools so that they can get a degree without having to deal with residency requirements. For example, I used only 1 DANTES and 3 CLEP exams toward a BA with 2 full majors (CS and Psychology) from TESC; the rest of my credits came from prior coursework and 5 courses taken (for a grade) through DL. I get the impression that a significant percentage of people who pursue degrees from these schools are in a similiar position, having already accumulated a large number of credits through traditional methods.

    James,

If you have 15 courses on a transcript as pass/fail I don't think it will hurt you a bit, unless you are aiming for a grad school that is loaded with degree snobs and extraordinarily expensive. With everyone and their brother offering a master's program, they seem to be triping over each other trying to get students. My personal experience has been as follows: A bachelors ( Sept.) from a small sacs accreditited college, 10 courses by dantes (college limit), after sending in applications to grad school and talking to admissions they all seem to offer a green light contingent on graduation.
    Good luck,

    horses for courses

If you think you ever might want to attend graduate school, then build your undergrad. degree around the requirements of the graduate schools you are considering.
It is easier to plan a course of study, than it is to retrofit a degree to meet a new need.
So if you are attending excelsior, and might want to attend capella for a graduate degree. Check out the requirements capealla has for admission.
If you are attending excelsior, and might want to attend a SUNY grad school. check out the requirements of the Suny.
    All the best!
