Excelsior BS/CIS -> Grad School

    I am sure this question has been asked before, though perhaps not in the context of Computer Science degrees:

    How widely accepted is an Excelsior College CS degree in getting into a CS MS program? I can understand that it would probably be ranked below traditional curriculums in an application pool... but would taking the GRE CS subject test (for credit at Excelsior, and getting into grad school) make up for this? What are the other factors involved (high GRE general scores... papers published... industry experience...?)? Can anyone tell me about specific circumstances where someone used a DL or exam-earned degree in CS as a ticket to get in to a more widely-recognized MS program?

    I don't think Excelsior College even offers a computer science degree. They have a Computer Information Systems degree (CIS), which is a small step in the direction of a CS degree, but definitely NOT the same thing. Check out Thomas Edison State College.

    This will depend on the graduate school. Your best bet is to contact the graduate school(s) you are interested in applying to. For the most part I have seen Excelsior grads get into the school of their choice with only a few exceptions.

    Re: Excelsior BS/CIS -> Grad School

    My situation isn't quite the same, but I got into a standard computer science MS program at De Paul with a BS in psychology from Michigan State and a BS in operations management from Regents (now Excelsior.)

    As has been pointed out elsewhere in the thread, the CIS degree is not the same as CS and, in my case, would have added nothing to my preparation for the master's work. As it was, I was accepted provisionally and had to test out of a bunch of discrete math/data structures/analysis of algorithms material before I was "fully" enrolled. None of this stuff comes up in the typical CIS program.

    Regards.
