I definitely recommend taking the test with the essay because (1) I've heard that it is easier than the other and (2) some colleges will only accept the test with the essay.

That said, I used the Comex study guide and Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP, and passed with a 73. The essay question kind of caught me off guard  , but thankfully, I had practiced writing a lot of essays on the spot before I took the test. :)

Has anyone here ever taken both the English Comp w/ Essay and Freshman College Comp w/ Essay? I assume that the Freshman College Comp was easier, but what were the major differences?

I've been taking the practice tests through Peterson and I'm not doing very well. I'm consistently scoring in the low 40 percentile. I know this practice test is more difficult than the actual test. Meanwhile, the IC questions are extremely easy.

This will be my first CLEP.

I ordered a couple of other study guides from Amazon, but they won't be here for a week or so.

Question : My junior college lists the English Comp with Essay as it's 1yr comp clep. The four year college that I am transferring to, lists the Freshman Comp with Essay as its clep. Are these the same tests? Will I have to take both?

    Thanks

These are two different exams. The primary difference between the exams are who grades the essay. For English Comp with Essay, the ETS contracted faculty grade the exam. For the Freshman Comp with Essay, the school you send the score to grades the essay.

IMHO, the four year college wants to grade the essay to ensure competency and they're not likely to move on that requirement. I would check with the JUCO to see if they are OK with Freshman Comp with Essay - be sure to explain the situation.

    Good luck!

Really? I was under the impression that Collegeboard grades both the essay on the English Comp and Freshman English Comp. Does this mean that you can't take Freshman Comp w/ Essay unless you're currently enrolled in the school you plan on attending?

I take English Comp w/ Essay tomorrow. However, if I fail, I plan on taking Freshman Comp w/ Essay. I was planning on enrolling at TESC, but it's won't be until early next year.

Here's the "official word" from the College Board Freshman English Composition Website:

What the exercise tells you is that basically, after you substitute "that, because" with "that special" the correct sentence will also contain one of the five combinations of words in the example. It's your job to choose the combination that makes sense once you have modified the sentence.

If you check out all the choices, only D contains the right tense and syntax that will make the sentence be sensical, ONCE you modify it.

Changes in English Comp CLEP in July 2010

    Hello all,

The College Board has announced major changes in the English Composition CLEP starting in July 2010. The Freshman College Composition Examination, English Composition, and English Composition w/Essay will be retired:

Two new exams will replace them:

    1. College Composition
    2. College Composition Modular

College Composition will be multiple choice with two essays selected by CLEP.

College Composition Modular allows the receiving college more flexibility:

    * An essay section provided by CLEP and scored by the college
    * An essay section provided and scored by the college
    * Another assessment or evaluation determined by the college, or no essay at all

If I take the Freshman Comp and the English Comp, will I be able to study only the Freshman Comp and pass both? I'm very good at English.

I'm not sure if this post will be read anytime soon, and I have until January before I need to take the English Composition with Essay CLEP. I have a GED and I wondered how the test compares to the reading and writing sections of the GED, when I took those sections I half-assed my way through them and still passed with a pretty good score on each, so if I full-ass the CLEP do you think I could pass?

If you have a GED, AND you put in the work for the CLEP, you should have no issues passing. Take some practice tests to assess where you are; and work on writing five paragraph essays.

    Good luck!

The only CLEP test I took was English with Essay (some time ago) and put it towards my Excelsior degree (I believe this CLEP exam may no longer be accepted by Excelsior).

    Two things I did:
    (1) On the first page of the essay book I scribbled my essay outline and ideas before I started writng,
    (2) I added a footnote "Normally I would verify the spelling of words identified with an * using a dictionary." (I'm usually good at spelling buy sometimes question myself.)

Just passed Freshman Comp nearly cold. I've always been great at writing, and I just took all the drills in the REA book, then took a practice test which I got a 65 on, then took the test and got a 70. About half of the questions were reading comprehension though, which I thought was a little strange. The test seemed more like an analyzing and revising lit test than a composition, but whatever. I took it without essay.
