    Hi

One question, please. Exactly who or what was Pen Foster? Google comes up with zip. Is it just made up? I don't think it sounds bad although something like Ashworth College seems a little better.

I think their courses are text based aren't they?

If so I think they should have changed their name to Foster Books College.

The "Penn" portion of the name is based upon the school's location in Pennsylvania. The "Foster" portion of the name comes from the school's founder, Thomas J. Foster.

If indeed they use "College" in the name for their degree programs then I agree it would be a step up as far as the name goes. Education Direct was kind of an awkward name for a distance learning institution, in my opinion.

I live about 15 minutes away from Education Direct. For almost a century it was nationally known as International Correspondence Schools (ICS). It was the leading correspondent educational institutions in the region during Scranton's manufacturing and coal mining heyday.

The school has a rich history that stems back to the late 1800s. It's currently in the process of reinvention for the times hence the name changes.

Here is a picture of the school's first building...

They have since moved to a more modern facility in the north side of the city. The building shown above is now a social services building.

Thanks. I like Thomas Foster College or simply Foster College better than Penn Foster. Oh well.
