    Hello,

As always, in reading this forum I learn of a new program. In a previous thread there was mention of a certificate program in Supervisory Skills at Cornell.

    http://www.ecornell.com/catalog/certificates/ilrmdc1.jsp

Does anyone know of this program or heard anything about it? Also, how long does it take to complete?

It appeals to me because many of the courses are very relevant to what I will be doing in January.

Time is a factor in that I want to be able to learn basic skills to provide a foundation in my new role and not have to wait 2 years to complete a Master's degree.

Also, my reasoning in pursuing a certificate such as this as that it help me on a daily basis at work and get my feet wet for graduate studies. I also don't think it would hurt to add Cornell on a resume.

    Any opinions?

Thanks for asking this question. I was wondering about the same Certificate myself! Maybe we'll get some answers soon.

I don't know about that certificate. But I finished the 6 month course in Human Resource Management last October. It took time about 5-10 hours a week to do and was interesting. There were several sub-units per subject.

But you only had to make one post per sub-unit they taught. Most places want you to do more. But the material is quite well done and the instructors are very knowledgable. It moved very fast and maybe that's why only one post per unit was required.

    jimwe,

Thank you for your reply. Did you feel that the material covered was in line with the price charged for the course? If I choose a program such as this, I will be paying for it out of pocket.

If I had to do it all over again, I probably would not have. $5k is pretty pricey for a postgrad certificate. I learned a lot, but I'm still paying for it!

Is 5k really that pricey compared to having Cornell University's name on your resume? Has it helped you to move up or get a better job? My wife was considering the same program so she can move from being a paralegal into legal administrator (HR). I'd love to know if it has helped you in your career.

As yet, it hasn't done anything. But then neither has my MS Ed from Cal State Hayward. I'm still in Korea and am returning to the USA in 2006.

I want to change jobs from teaching ESL to Health and Safety Training. I figured it would help, especially if I took the PHR (Professional Human Resources Test). But I haven't had any luck finding a place where I can take it in Korea. I'll have to wait until I come back to the USA to take it.
