Hi, Not sure how many of you read the IT forum, but I posted some links to a new school who's become Wyoming licensed to operate as a university. The 'news' to me is the company that's doing this. The company is EC-Council they offer some of the more respected IT security certifications in the indutry. The new website can be found here .
It seems to have something to learn, especially Internet business. However, how about its professional recognition in IT field? Is it worthwhile? How much of the tuition fee? ... etc
It's recognised, although not the leader in security certs. More respected are the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, or (ISC)2 (CISSP credential) and SANS Institute. The latter had recently started offering Master's degrees as well. Onter worthy contenders are IS Audit and Control Association (CISA/CISM) and vendors like Cisco and Symantec. I'm sure I missed someone.
I'd certainly agree that the CISSP is more respected. I didn't know that SANS was offering a masters now. A quick look at their website shows the cost between $28,000 and $30,000. There's no prices yet listed for EC-Council. SANS has two degrees both related to IT Security, while only one of the two degrees EC-Council offers is IT Security, the other is an MBA in e-business.
I think that SANS Technical Institute might just be the most worthy unaccredited school today. I'm sure EC University is legitimate, too, but there's not enough info to judge quality just yet.
The first thing that came to my mind was EC - the UK Engineering Council. I know this entity is not related but is the name chosen to confuse? Also what is the EC Council stands for, the EC in the name is?
May I know whether it is nationally accredited in USA or not? The council described it is a licensed private university in Alabama only!
Well, this is a relatively well-established technical certifications and training company, so I think it is highly unlikely that they chose their name to be confused with UK Engineering Council. They're not even in the same fields. I am almost certain this is a sincere effort. Whether they can pull it off is another matter...
The degree doesn't really seem to exist yet, only time will tell how much value it may have. I'm sure it's value will be less than that of an accredited degree, however it may hold some value with companies who are familer with EC-Council's certification programs.
