I would like to get some thoughts on the difference between the two MBA programs.

    Heriot-Watt-

    1. I like the online part of the EMBA. If it really works where you go through the topics and take the questions and the profile is correct meaning if you learn the info on the site and score high in the profile you have a good chance of passing the exams.

    2. I like it that on the site they pretty much tell you how the program will work in the demo section.

    3. I also like that you can pay one class at a time.

    Durham

    1. It is AMBA.

    2. They don't really go in to much detail about the program I'm guessing they give you some books and a outline and you read and take a test at the end of the year? Is there much interaction among students or profs?

According the the Economist the Heriot Watt was rated higher correct? Anyone have any experience with both programs? or the Durham don't hear from that many people that have done it.

Generally speaking, Durham is one of the oldest universities in the UK and it is prestigious. I don't know the Economist's ranking. However, it has a higher ranking in FT 2001 (Durham 18 & Heriot-Watt 43) and the related link is http://specials.ft.com/universities2001/FT3HLLAN6LC.html
FT 2002 ranking will be released shortly.

In addition, Durham Business School is ranked 89 in FT MBA (throughout the world) Ranking 2002 and the related link is http://specials.ft.com/spdocs/FT31UUB8MWC.pdf

The University of Durham is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in England after Oxford, Cambridge and Bristol. Given a choice between Heriot-Watt and Durham, I would say go for Durham just because of this reason.

Don't get me wrong, Heriot-Watt is a fine Scottish school with an excellent reputation. Besides, the Durham MBA is AMBA accredited wheras the H-W MBA is not (yet).

I will assume you are in the US, my apologies otherwise.

First, the UK system works for a relatively high degree of homogeneity with respect to academic standards... although the schools are not equal, the quality concerns that you have in the US system are not relevant.

If you were looking for a full-time program, I would go with Durham for the reasons mentioned.

A distance program from the US gets a little more complicated.
HW has spent a truck-load of money developing their DL program (courses, pedagogy, electronic support, etc.)... At Durham, the DL program is secondary... at HW, the full-time program is secondary.

Furthermore, HW has an office in the US as well as several thousands of students... you can likely find study-mates if you wish.

HW offers specialisations and more electives.

    Durham offers a disertation option.

Incidently, HW HAD AMBA accreditation a couple years ago, until they fully integrated the DL program with full-time program... apparently, to be AMBA accredited requires the DL program to be separate from the full-time program.

Bottom line... see what meets your needs... they are both excellent programs.
