    Bofors it was indeed.

    Here's a good overview, and you can even hear the gun firing its distinctive "pom-pom" sound;

The Bofors and the 20mm Oerlikon guns were shoehorned onto every available square foot of deck space for AA purposes. Between those weapons and the radar-guided proximity fuses on the 5-inch/38-caliber rifles, the AA capability of US ships in the latter part of WWII was quite impressive.

    A really good overview of naval weaponry;

This post has been itchin' me for a few days. Today I had a long hard day out in the hot sun and I'm just tired enough to say exactly what I'm thinking.

If you can't figure out how to find this dissertation then you can't possibly be smart enough to understand it.

I'm going to bed now "Dr."

And considering I did everything but purchase a copy and mail it to him/her and he/she hasn't responded, I wonder if the enthusiasm cooled after the title of this thread turned out to be not exactly what he/she was hoping. ;)

I'll provide it to anyone with a valid e-mail address. (I owe one.)

    Hi Rich,

I have a copy and am citing it in an article that I am writing for a refereed journal, since it is still the best work on the subject of the role of education/training in the detection of bogus diploma mills and accreditation mills. Did I recall correctly that you had published a condensed version in a journal? I would like to find that and cite it as well.

Who said anybody about Dr. T not being able to find the dissertation?

He was asking for a link to quickly find the dissertation.

I.e. he was very smart indeed.

Instead of using his resources to find the dissertation, he was hoping that others would find it for him.

If this is your definition of "smart" then I fear for your future. To me it seems closer to a definition of "lazy."

Do not worry. My future is very bright. In fact so bright that I have to wear sunglasses.

    Thanks for your concerns.

Whoops. There it became brighter again. Off to the shop to buy new sunglasses....

Definitions may always be twisted to suit ones own purposes.

We could say that Dr T. is "smart", or "lazy", or an expert on delegating.

So John Doe, with a total of 5 posts, comes to the defense of Dr. T who has a total of 1 post. If John wants to think of this as "delegating" then that's fine. Except for one thing. Dr. T is a non-entity and none here (or probably anywhere) work for him. You can say he's an expert on delegating but that implies that he has the power to delegate. He has no power here. It appears that the only one he's "delegating" to is you.

    Hello. Is that you, Kizmet?

Sorry. I can't read what you are writing....

Haven't gotten hold of those sunglasses yet, and I can't see without them...... the future, you know.... so bright......

Something about 5 posts. 5 is a good number.

    Examples:

The 5th day of the week, Friday. Enjoyed by most individuals.
5 fingers on a hand. Convenient.

I like 5. Too bad my post count now increases to 6.

Edit: Post count is 7, not 6. That's good. Then I've got the whole week covered.

It's an interesting strategy. Play up the humor angle and maybe nobody will notice that you can't make any serious replies. Good luck with that.

I think it's fair to say that some people don't care enough to make serious replies. And there is nothing wrong with that at all.

Some people take the internet waaaaaaaaaay too serious.

You are suggesting that they are not to be taken seriously. I'm good with that. But they still need to be (gently?) eased out of the way as you walk down the sidewalk.

That's because they're both posting from the same IP address.

    Bye bye, trolls.

I'll save the next one for you; perhaps even egg them on bit before you drop the hammer. :p

Hey! Somehow that plan seems familiar. I like it!

This thread was begun by someone attending an unaccredited school to earn a doctorate without having to write a dissertation. His main point was that my doctoral research--again, somethinig neither the OP nor the more recent troll seems to have done--"proved" that degrees from unaccredited schools had utility. No kidding.

It is commonly understood that such degrees were useful--the demand for them feeds the coffers of hundreds of degree mills. But it helped to explore why this was true. But what is conveniently omitted by people like the OP is that once employers find out about unaccredited degrees, their acceptance of these credentials drops--bad news for those students who take that chance.

As for the more recent troll, it seems he is content with making insinuations about a dissertation he hasn't even read. I guess this is easier than actually writing one for himself.
