The Mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, who is running for re-election, has admitted that he has lied for years about having a degree from the University of Massachusetts.

A minor secondary detonation occurred when Hizzoner stated in a debate that the City Planner (appointed by the Mayor) has a degree in urban planning from Harvard. He doesn't.

Interesting story, Bruce. Sadly, this will be an ongoing problem. For every time bomb which explodes, there are numerous others lying dormant which will never be exposed. Therefore, there will always be those willing to take the gamble.

Ironically, many of the people of Salem will once again vote for the mayor. After all, he did lie, but, surely he wouldn't lie about anything else. [IMG]

Hopefully, this situation does not result in a witch hunt for people making fallacious claims about their academic credentials!

I hope it sparks laws in all states that contain jail time and/or fines for anyone caught claiming false credentials, at least in those states that don't yet have such a law.

I don't understand why it would be called a witch hunt since we know that witches don't exist and we know that frauds unfortunately do exist.

And as Russell predicted, Usowicz was indeed re-elected today in Salem. [IMG]

Early returns are showing that the Mayor, Stanley Usovicz, has won re-election.

Speaking of people never learning...the people of Salem deserve whatever they get.

One thing that i like about you members of the cloth, is how understanding and forgiving you are towards your fellow man.

You should say '...there go I but for...' and pray for the poor devil - but NO. As you couldn't find a legitimate back door to a qualification and had to take the hard road, so must everyone else. But then, is there really any way that there could be a hard road in a religious degree area?

Reverend Father, I think that the only reason you don't 'gut' these poor unfortunate well meaning, slightly misled poor sods, is that you don't need garters, or don't wear socks.

I will pray for you that your heart is not nay longer hard :))

    Peter,

A recent research project revealed that those who associate in any capacity with a degree mill, (e.g., student, faculty, administration, lying about credentials, etc.), are not personally responsible for their actions. Actually, a genetic mutation has been discovered which seems to predispose one to associate with such institutions.

Therefore, since this is a new segment of the downtrodden, I am considering opening a rehabilitation center, complete with 12-step recovery program, for degree mill addicts. It will be similar in structure to AA, but called "RA/GAAP Unlimited."

You are correct! We do need to help these poor unfortunate souls who commit fraud, lie, deceive, etc. After all, they can't really help it---they have an addiction and are ill.

I am NOT a degree mill addict [IMG]

The people of Salem don't care about what degrees hizzoner has. They care about clean streets and garbage collection and police protection.

Most of us on this group either have or are pursuing graduate degrees from properly accredited schools. We are in the minority. I get calls regularly from people who want to know where they can get training in some vocational area. I tell them about directories and public libraries and warn them about proper accreditation. They have no idea what I am talking about and don't care.

I mention that they might need a license or certification to practice their field--they haven't a clue. Once woman told me a horror story about her husband who went to a less than wonderful school. When I suggested that she check into the accreditation of the school that she planned to attend, I could tell over the phone that she had a blank look on her face.

In academe, it's important to everybody. Otherwise it really isn't. Too bad.

While I agree with Judy that most people on the street know nothing about the details of accreditation, most of them do know that something called "accreditation" exists and that "not accredited" is bad. What kind of bad, they probably can't tell you. But bad.

But that's not even the issue here. The mayor of Salem allegedly *lied* about having a degree from U.Mass. That goes directly to his honesty and integrity.

I'm not going to comment on his reelection. Perhaps his constituents know him well, like him and think that he's doing a good job. It's their decision whether they are willing to overlook this lapse.

But I think that they do understand what lying means.

If he had listed no degrees whatsoever on his resume, I don't think anyone would have cared. If he listed a degree from a less-than-wonderful school, I don't think anyone would have noticed.

However, he outright lied about having a degree from a very real and pretty wonderful school, UMass-Amherst. If he has no regard for the truth about his own background, how can he be trusted with anything?

I should say I'm really not surprised he was re-elected, the Massachusetts electorate is prehaps the most dysfunctional group of people ever. These are the people who demand ballot initiatives to lower taxes, reform welfare, and restore the death penalty...then they re-elect Ted Kennedy every 6 years.

    <snip>then they re-elect Ted Kennedy every 6 years. <snip>

But Massachusetts has some of the best schools in the nation with extremely high academic standards. And, you're right, Kennedy keeps getting elected. Mitt Romney had the best chance and he lost. If Carla Howell had been a Republican instead of a Libertarian she may have come close. She almost came in second as it was.

There is another version of this mutation. It has been detected in people who can't make the grade with a 'proper' PhD, and opt for a PhD in 'religion' which has always been regarded either as a 'soft option' or just simply 'soft'.

They suffer from a delusion probably exacerbated by their 'self righteous' and 'sinless' state. This delusion is that the topic of any research at PhD level is of no consequence - and that the 'real' benefit of the PhD degree is the process of research rather than the content.

It is believed that there is NO treatment for this disease. It has a 'brother' and it is evidenced in having to undertake the 'PhD' in far flung places by research alone, the real reason being that the 'stress' brought on by the 'rigour' of advanced coursework, would destroy the soul.

It would appear that there is no suitable 12 step plan for people with this version of the illness. Maybe we should consider offering them some 'safe place' where they will not feel threatened or 'different' to their fellow man.

    Any suggestions where? Maybe.....?

If he was allowed to run again, he certainly would have carried Massachusetts. As for the Presidency overall, I don't know. His act was starting to wear pretty thin towards the end.
