Does Oxford offer a distance-learning option for a doctorate in English literature?

  1. Hello, everyone!

I'm interested in getting my PhD in English via a distance-learning program. A user here recommended Old Dominion University, and I did apply, but I am a bit fearful of the reputation. I do want to go to a bigger school so I can maybe have a shot at academia someday, if I wanted to make the switch from teaching high school.

Does Oxford offer a distance-learning option for those who want a PhD in literature? Thank you so much for your help! :)

    You should ask them.

I realize that the former is higher on league tables, fair enough, but "fearful of the reputation" seems a bit surprising. What do you want to be able to do that you believe you could do with a DPhil from Oxford but not a PhD from Old Dominion?

  5. Thank you so much for your reply! I guess I was just worried. I had a few people tell me that if I got my PhD from Old Dominion, I wouldn’t have a good shot at getting a university job. But with a bigger name, maybe I have a shot? What do you think?

Honestly? I think one's odds of getting a tenure track faculty position in an English department is very small no matter where one earns a doctorate.

PhD programs in the UK are research programs. I guess as long as you show that you have the means to conduct your research where you live + fly over a few times to consult, might be doable. U should go check with them.

    there's.. 4 places available.

Maybe a more accessible PhD program would be from the University of Leicester.

As a research degree, there are (typically) no fixed on-campus requirements. But that doesn't mean they don't exist. Also, your advisor will be a big player in deciding when and how much time you'll spend on campus. You should ask.

I don't see any reason to assume that.

  9. Thank you so much, everyone.

I guess I'm in a bit of a pickle. I have always wanted to attend a top school for my PhD. But to be honest, maybe it's not all that it's cut out to be. I went to a top school for my master's and I hated it. NYU was a disaster. :(

I would love to get my PhD via a distance-learning program, but if I have to do it the non-traditional way, I guess I want a good, reputable name.

That's certainly available. But it might not matter.

I got far more mileage from my no-name PhD than I ever did with my semi-big-name-school doctorate. (Of course, that was impacted by which came first in my career.)

As a loose rule, the later you are in your career--assuming you want to stay on that track--the less important the source of the degree--or even having one.

Almost all of the schools we talk about are open-admission. That is, they accept all qualified candidates. (And some who do not strictly meet the qualifications.)

I'm guessing this is not the case with Oxford.

Not at all, I am interested in the University of Oxford's Researched Ph.D. focusing on Data Science but looking at the admission criteria. I don't think I have any chance.

Further, I would supposed the admissions requirements are the minimums and, as such, would not guarantee admission. I would imagine the actual bar is set much, much higher.

I was interested until I read at least a 30-day residency is a must each year.

    That's a feature, not a bug.

  17. I didn’t realize how competitive it is! Of course, I think it’s because it’s Oxford. I was interested in the program, but I don’t know if I should try to apply anymore. :(
