    Hey,

Was wondering (from anybody who might have had a previous experience) how credits earned from a DETC institution might transfer to a regionally accredited school. Whenever I call a school and try to ask that question the only thing they tell me is that I need to have those transcripts sent so they can be reviewed............ which is also the same answer I get about unaccredited schools (when I ask about California Coast University). Does this stuff transfer? Let mek now about your past experiences with these matters......

This question has been discussed at great length. I would encourage you to use the search function to explore it further.

Bear's survey (in 2001) of admissions officials at RA schools indicated that about 20% of them said they would accept such credits and another 20% or so would consider it.

On a sliding scale of acceptability, if RA was a "10," credits from DETC schools would rate a 4 or 5. You can find schools that will accept them, but to varying degrees. Many will not accept them at all. It pays to check.

Hi Rich - It's been a while - but nice to see you still posting. The acceptance of DETC school credits is increasing - not as fast as we would like, but there has been significant progress in the last 3 years. North Central accepts all DETC students and Walden's policy has been changed such that they have "approved accepting students and transfer credit from institutions accredited by any accreditor recognized by CHEA, as long as they are degree granting and the course of study relates to the Walden requirements." I think there are others that have also changed since the original survey was done.

Aspen has had generally good results with having our students accepted into doctoral programs, but I also know that for every two students who apply to Capella, I have to call Capella and remind them of our articulation agreement so even calling and sending in transcripts will not guarantee you will be given the right information about whether or not your credits/degree will be accepted. In a large school with many admissions people, and with staff changes and additions, information is not always accurately communicated. It pays to be persistent!

We advise students considering transfer to identify the schools first and work with them, with our assistance if need be, and confirm that they will be able to transfer before they enroll with us.

    Best,
    Mary

BTW, I'm all in favor of greater acceptance of credits and degrees from DETC schools.
