It's not going to happen for either of them, but Hakeem Jeffries has 212 votes and Trump has....zero.

That's not true, Rich. Donald Trump does not have zero votes.

Let me float this idea around.

Let's say Trump steps in, says that he'll be interterm Speaker of the House for 30-90 days, then step aside.

Just long enough to vote on a bunch of bills and impeach Biden.

Trump wouldn't be the least bit interested in being Speaker of the House, I believe. As President he could act unilaterally. That is more his style. I don't believe that Trump is the least bit interested in compromise or political negotiation. The only policy that he is really interested in is lowering his own taxes and those sort of self interests. I agree that Trump being Speaker is more likely than Jefferies though but not by much.

(I assume that Nosborne was just making a joke.)

I can't imagine a majority of members elect would entertain that idea for a New York nanosecond. For one thing, some of the GOP remember January 6th and will be honest with themselves even if not with their Base. Few want to see Trump back in office. Add even a few to the solid 212 Democratic bloc and it's dead on arrival..

Second it would be pointless since there's really no possibility that the Senate would bother to even try such an impeachment even if it did get through the House so why bother.

No, not a joke but certainly a rational outcome that has little hope in a highly irrational environment.

Donald Trump got one vote in the latest round. Or, as the New York Times puts it, Donald Trump Loses Another Election!

There are a few hints in the rumor mills. Some Republicans are talking with some Democrats. The idea is a sort of coalition government that will freeze out the Freedom Caucus (and McCarthy too, I suppose) but won't freeze out AOC and the Squad. I say this because AOC herself was spotted talking across the aisle. Could mean nothing; could mean everything. At least one Democrat refused to comment because he didn't want to spoil the negotiations that he wouldn't admit are taking place. Other Democrats are saying more openly that they will listen but that the price of bailing out the GOP will be high. How high? Well, not so high as to require the Speaker to be a Democrat. But high. Whatever the Dems decide to do you can bet it won't happen without Jeffries' blessing.

Yes, this is real. Donald Trump just posted that on Truth Social. Shortly after that post, his odds for Speaker jumped to 7%. See my hat above.

January 6, 2023, would be a great day for Trump to be VOTED in as Speaker of The House.

Yes - but only if it's the proverbial "Frosty Friday" in you-know-where. :(

While that was also an argument against both impeachments of Donald Trump, one of the points is for the history of it. (I'm not calling for Biden to be impeached, just making an observation about what motivates futile impeachments.)

I will never vote for any Republican as long as there is a Trump involved (or trying to be involved) in politics. He is a petulant child. I am disgusted that anyone would fall for his lies. I would be more than happy to vote for a qualified Republican if they actually had the backbone to get Trump out of the party and didn’t allow him to influence their candidates.

Then take their money, because Trump has as much chance of being Speaker of the House as I do.

...and then everyone in the store applauded.

Being President of the United States doesn't require any skill, as long as you're willing to be an idiot. There is enough structure around the job to ensure that.

But being Speaker of the House of Representatives has an actual skill set associated with it. You have to know how to form committees, develop legislation, etc. There are "hard" skills needed to function in the role, in addition to the "soft" skills (like persuasion and tact) that help the Speaker be effective.

Having an idiot with no interest in actually doing the job is disastrous in the presidency. But putting such a person in the role of Speaker would halt the House entirely.

And that’s the problem. There should be some educational, intellectual, or experiential requirement related to law, government, public policy… maybe an IQ/EQ test. I dont know. But something to keep out megalomaniac idiots.

It would be nice if one of those outfits that sends questionnaires to political candidates and rates them would just send out a basic test on economics and publicly announce how well the candidates do on it.

That's the paradox of political power: no one who pursues it should be allowed anywhere near it.

    I disagree.

For every career civil service position there are requirements to qualify to be considered for hire.

For every political appointment, there are still qualifications to be met, but the administration has much more latitude. (For the higher positions, the Senate must confirm.)

For elected positions anywhere, the people are selecting their representative by majority vote. Sure, there are some shenanigans regarding gerrymandering at all levels, and the US Senate is almost as un-democratic and a democratic body can get, but the basic principle still applies: the people choose their representatives.

I have no problem with the myriad problematic representatives being in Congress. Sure, I don't like some, but I don't question their right to be there. (And I don't question the House's right to remove some. I'm looking at you, George Santos.)

If people want a better government, they can vote in better representatives. But the likes of Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and Marjorie Taylor Greene were not voted in to run the government. They were voted in to jam it up and take it down. (It's all right in front of us.) If you appreciate representative democracy, then that's the challenge. Their voters. Win that.

We should not be presented with idiots or maniacs as candidates. Period. And Trump is a maniac. People like him should never make it on to the ballot. Just like any other job, unqualified people should be weeded out *before* the interview stage.

If you go back to my earlier post, you'll see all my betting predictions were correct, unlike your November 9th prediction that Lauren Boebert was going to lose her election.

It looks like they will do one vote tonight, and that should do it. Otherwise, we go into Saturday.

The racist Democrats are at it again
SNL should do a skit tomorrow on the Speaker of The House battle. So I may post the video on Sunday when it's released.

If I were a writer for SNL, I would write about how the Dems praised their black Speaker of The House candidate and then quickly called the GOP black Speaker of The House candidate a white supremacist.
