I think if they changed the majority rule to one requiring a plurality, the threat of this happening would bring the Taliban 20 back into the fold. They won't risk a Democratic Speaker.

Still, it would be an extremely risky move. If McCarthy really does such a thing he will be risking the real scenario of a Democratic speaker. It would demonstrate severe selfishness on McCarthy's part to risk a Democratic speaker for his goal of being speaker. If Trump was in his position it would likely already have been done. :D

IIRC, McCarthy can't do it. It would have to be a motion on the floor followed by a vote. I believe, however, that only a plurality would be required to pass the motion for the rule change.

Hm. Really. A plurality? Interesting. Maybe inevitable too. I'm having trouble imagining the non-Freedom Caucus members voting for anyone the FC puts forth. Those folks are upset. But if neither group can decide on a suitable candidate what else can happen except that the Democrats ride to the rescue? Jeffries needs just six GOP votes to win even without a rules change.

Fooey…. They interrupted my General Hospital. Totally missed a few pivotal scenes. Yeah yeah…. I can pull it up on Hulu or whatever, but seriously…. Do they really need to blather on over and over about something they could have summed up with a few sentences on the news…. Which comes on immediately afterwards?? :emoji_mrs_claus:

Wow, is General Hospital still a thing? I'd have thought "Tootsie" drove a stake through its heart.;)

Gosh that was a long time ago. 40 years to be precise.

I'd like to be saying exactly those words, in 2063 about this current Speaker controversy. That'd make me 120. And have "Old Nosborne," who'd by then be 108, still here, hale & hearty, to agree with me. :)

Yep. As of April 1, it will have been running for 60 years. Is the starting date somehow significant? The only longer-running program I can think of right away is UK's Coronation Street. That awful thing started in 1960. I got out of that trap cold-turkey a few years back, despite sweats, raving, withdrawal - the whole 9 yards. "Somebody call Tracy Barlow. I need my fix!" Worst UK export ever! As lethal as kippers, treacle and Black Pudding, together. Yeah - all of that.

First air date of General Hospital: April, 1963. First air date of Doctor Who: November, 1963. General Hospital is only slightly older. :D

Some Canadians say the worst UK export would be the Vauxhall Victor. A pint-size under-performing "austerity Chevrolet" from a company owned by General Motors. Vauxhalls in general did not like Canadian Winters -- and would pull every trick and malfunction they knew of (many), to stay inside until the warm weather. Road salt they were unaccustomed to would soon claim them and they would sleep forever.

And now, back to our regular programming. :)

I swear these special report folks just like to hear themselves talk. There have been many times where it’s like,

….And now Billy Bob just entered the room. They are going to talk to him next. Oh yeah, it’ll be interesting to see what he has to say. Let’s speculate whats going to happen and then recap it all six more times while we wait to see what Billy Bob is going to say. Yeah, Billy Bob just got here two mintes ago. We will hear from him next. It’s definitely going to be interesting to hear what he has to say. There goes Billy Bob taking his seat. We should hear from him soon. He just got here a few minutes ago and now he’s sitting down. We will hear from him shortly now that he took a seat. We are just waiting for Sally to come and join Billy Bob. We will hear what he has to say pretty soon. We are all interested in what he has to say…..

And I am over here like. OMG, you interrupted my entertainment of crazy fun fictional stories to blather on about nothing? Just put the important stuff on the news and I will catch ya’ll later.

If this doesn't get resolved soon, Trump should throw his hat in the ring then we'll have a war between Ultra MAGA and the RINO's/weak Republicans.

Nobody is worried about eyepatch McCain calling anybody traitors, and nobody is scared about a Democrat becoming Speaker of the House.

I'm reminded of Kissinger: "It's a pity both sides can't lose."

Besides, Trump lost the last round by 424 votes.

Well on November 22, 1963 I was home sick from 5th grade watching General Hospital. I didn't like the show but at the time there were only 3 channels and all three channels were soap operas. So anyway on November 22, 1963 I was watching General Hospital because there was nothing better on TV and the show was interrupted by the breaking news that President Kennedy had apparently just been shot at. Yes, I'm an old fart.

Ninth round. Jeffries continues to out poll McCarthy. I wonder if at some point a few of the the more mainstream Republicans won't decide that Jeffries as Speaker is a lesser evil than the Freedom Caucus dictating to a Speaker McCarthy.

An amusing fantasy to post about and to read about. :D

I doubt it, but if so then it would have to be those who don't plan to run again, because doing this in today's GOP would be political suicide. I mean, look at the people who already get called RINOs, just because their knuckles don't drag on the ground loudly enough.

I don't think it will happen. First, it will be hard to get any Republicans to cross over and support the enemy. Second, it's not clear he could get very much done. But most important, there's no assurance the entire Democratic bloc would go along. It might begin to split Democrats, and they don't need that right now.

I could see, however, Jeffries delivering enough Democratic votes for a Speaker who could be tolerated by Democrats...and that sufficient and significant concessions were offered

It's more likely that Trump becomes Speaker of the House than Hakeem Jeffries.
