Had the effort proceeded unchecked, that record would have easily fallen to the Berne spammer, who once attempted to flood every thread on all forums with the same Berne drivel post.

How did you do it??? I have checked the board daily for about 6months now - how did you break the habit??? Inquiring minds want to know!

"Break" it? Hardly. Check my posts numbers (which lead the pack). I've taken my leave on several occasions. Once was in response to a lot of crud I was taking. Another was when I felt I was just looking for fights. (Shame on me.) The last was because I had better things to do (finishing my dissertation).

This is the most energetic, interesting, stimulating, challenging, and annoying internet experience for anyone who makes this field a hobby (or an actual doctoral program). The alt.education.distance newsgroup is a joke. (But I'm the starring butt of the joke--go check it out.) About.com is a sewer, and the site guide won't stop the a.e.d.-style behavior. Collegehints.com is simply a circle-uh, well, a mutual admiration society for like minds. The listserv operated by Penn State is utterly dull (and focused on methodologies used by traditional schools). So here we are--ground zero for everything from nontraditional approaches to traditional degrees to degree mills and their shills. I dont' think I'll ever "leave" again. But my participation will come and go as the topics discussed dictate. Plus, I've changed jobs and am pretty occupied with my new profession. (Big change.)

Actually, DI is accused of being RA snobs, that have an agenda. DI has also been accused of baning folks that have a different opinion than than what is allow here. NOT that I buy that.

Since I have touted NA schools here, and I haven't been banned myself. I personally think the other boards are for folks, that don't want to get dirty, or have a grudge against D.I.

I'm a fan of DETC accreditation. But that doesn't mean I have to ignore the obvious limitations of such recognition. Some folks got bent out of shape over those facts, which resulted in an absurd level of denial.

Interestingly, I had a very nice conversation with a DETC official a few weeks ago who knew of these threads. She herself acknowledged (1) the limitations in terms of acceptance, (2) the effort necessary to overcome the situation, and (3) the appropriateness of acknowledging and discussing the realities of it. It was rather refreshing--no NA=RA dogma there. Hopes, goals, desires, yes. But denial? No way.
