I’ll try to put a positive spin on it. Donald Trump is the best President of the USA that I have seen in the past couple of months.
As someone who doesn't have a dog in the fight, meaning that I don't believe in either religion, my stance is that Mormons are not Christians. I follow this Independent Baptist minister who is objective when he educates people on various Christian denominations. His position is that, since categorizing faith groups is subjective, he will call a group Christian if they identify as such. Even though Islam has similarities with Christianity, he doesn't call Muslims Christians because they don't identify as Christians. Since Mormons identify as Christians, he respects that and calls them Christians. While I don't believe that this is a bad argument, I disagree with it. I don't disagree with the logic; I disagree with ignoring why Mormons have been calling themselves Christians. Mormons are taught to call themselves Christians so that it's easier to fit in and easier to convert Christians to LDS. I'm not going to call them Christians when they're doing it in bad faith. Mormons believe that the Christian Bible has too many mistakes, so they've added three canonical books that no Christian denomination believes are divinely inspired. Additionally, their canonical books extensively contradict the Christian Bible. Their canonical books don't even align with secular historical, genetic, and archaeological research. Although they claim to be monotheistic, this is not true. They believe that humans can ascend to the status of gods. LDS is more accurately described as monolatry.
I was brought up in the Mormon church. I decided at the age of seven that Joseph Smith was a conman. I still believe that to be true. That being said, Mormons call themselves Christian because they believe in the New Testament of the Bible. I agree that they have many beliefs that seem to be contradicted by the Bible but I think that is partially true of many Christian faiths. Mormons just have many more because I don't think Joseph Smith ever knew the Bible very well.
What is it that they believe in the New Testament? They decided that it was so erroneous that they replaced it with something drastically different. They've relegated the Bible to the same status that Muslims have.
I wouldn't say that. They teach lessons out of the Bible when I was in primary probably more often than out of the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is supposed to be similar to the New Testament except it took place in North America. So Jesus came to North America from Heaven and spread the gospel here. Then the story was written down on the Golden Plates. Joseph Smith was told where to get the golden plates and translated them with a magic seeing stone. Then the Angel Moroni came and took the golden plates back along with the magic seeing stone.
My understanding is this: while various Christian sects may have disagreements, all of them teach beliefs that broadly align with the Nicene Creed. Mormon teachings do not.
I'm the last person that would try to defend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I'm just trying to describe my understanding. Mormons consider themselves to be Christian. Regarding the Nicene Creed, I just read that for the first time. I agree that Mormons consider God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost to be three separate individuals. Although they do consider themselves to have a belief in a single God. My own personal guess at where this dichotomy comes from is Joseph Smith not having a good understanding of this point when he created the church. But, I'm far from being an expert on Mormon beliefs. Their explanation though is that Jesus is the son of God.
