It is important to emphasize mini modules in this context. These exams are not like CLEP, AP, and other testing out options we're accustomed to. Instead, students in these courses take what is essentially a pre-assessment to gauge their knowledge of the course content and then they complete mini modules depending on how well they do.

Know a lot? Then you'll have very few modules. Deficient in a few areas? Then you'll have the complete more modules. This really more adaptive learning than credit by exam.

Many competency-based programs are designed like this. Since you can't fast track your whole degree at CTU, I guess these are partially competency-based programs.

I was going to mention Adaptive Learning. The key difference is that a "credit by exam" or "test out" system typically has a binary result - you either pass the exam and get credit or you fail the exam and get no credit (and possibly are barred from trying again). With Adaptive Learning, failing a test just means that the course gets longer.
