COSC GPA Question

I did ask my advisor back in late December or early January about a cummulative GPA. She stated to me that cleps, dantes, and ece were all graded pass/fail. I then asked if my GPA from my associates would just flow through to a final GPA reflecting that one, which was 3.87. She said yes. When I asked if I would have trouble getting into graduate school, she stated she didn't feel anyone would have a problem with a GPA of 3.87. Still I worry about it some and feel I'll probably have to be admitted conditionally until I prove myself.

I still don't think COSC's reply within the context of Lawrie's site is clear at all. But I've learned that common sense does not always apply to higher education. Still, this is the best way for me to finish a degree and get on to what I'm trying to accomplish. I do think they owe their students a better, less wordy and jibberish answer to this question. Especially in light of the fact that two different people here on this board have two different grading systems on their degrees. Whatever.

Re: Re: Amazing Grace or "was blind but now I see.

No misdirection intended on my part nor any needed. The point was not to slight you or imply that you sought advice on the specifics of GPA policies or processes, but rather, that you sought advice, period. Whether that advice related to GPA doings or not, was and is of no great import. That is to say, the veracity of the critique is unaffected by the detail of the advice you solicited. All that was relevant is that you felt need to seek advice.

Given the foregoing, since no advantage could accrue to my position by misdirecting readers, why would I do so? Seems to me a lot of effort for no gain.

    Hi Dave,

With respect to notifying grad schools of GPA, no, I never said.

Below is the accurate but often misquoted or misinterpreted paragraph from BA in 4 Weeks - WHICH COLLEGE

"COSC say that they do, but decline to provide details of the required threshold scores. COSC do letter grade some exams, but not ECE/Regents. Yes, the grades will be used in calculating GPA for the purposes of awarding honors, but no GPA will appear on the transcript (we knew that - but it wont stop graduate schools calculating GPA). No, they wont tell you how they arrive at those letter grades. " http://www.bain4weeks.com/Whichcol.html

    Re: Re: COSC GPA Question

    Hi Lawrie

Thanks for the correction and my apologies for misqouting you. My hunch is any grad school would not count graded Dantes test. It makes the question of which school even tougher.

    Re: Re: COSC GPA Question

I wonder if some current students of COSC can contact them and verify the below mentioned GPA issue from their advisors ? so we can get some idea on how COSC would calculate GPA in the below scenario that I mentioned earlier since they only give P/F for CLEP.

what if I take all CLEP exams and two DANTES and 3 distance courses for BS at COSC and get grade "A" in all. My GPA in that case would be 4.0 out of 5 courses (since I can get only P/F for CLEP. that is about 15 credits for DANTES and distance courses at grade A) ? Most grad schools would look at GPA from the last 60 credits, however in this case it would be from 15 credits. Would a grad school give me admission ? would this be a true GPA ?

I think it would depend on how selective the graduate school is and what else the canididate has to offer. If it were a highly selective program and assuming the candidate had little else to offer, the answer would likely be no. If the program were only mildly seletive something like a high GRE or LSAT score might tip the balance. Remember the grad school is likely to only consider grades for the courses taken not the exams.

    Why do you say that?

Mostly conjecture on my part. If we are talking a highly competitive grad school (i.e. law school or a psychology doctoral program), I would rather over prepare myself than under prepare. Is there evidence otherwise?

    Hi Dave,
I think that, in the world of school rankings (where part of the ranking is determined by accepted students GPA,) schools would not want to preclude any transcripted grade from their records (especially if it would raise the GPA, as is implied in this thread.) This is separate from the suggestion that they might discount grades earned through testing. Competitive schools readily admit that they consider GPA based on major, school attended, et cetera. I believe that some schools might discount grades through testing in a similar matter. But preclude them? I find that hard to believe. When your GPA is given less importance, for whatever reason, it is more important to get a good score on your specific graduate admittance exam.
Of course, some of this is also conjecture on my part. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Re: Re: Re: COSC GPA Question

How the grad school treats your 9 or 15 graded credits is up to them. As for Charter Oak, they only use your GPA to calculate honors. Since you would have less then 30 graded credits, you would not be eligible for honors.

The question mainly was whether COSC would calculate GPA and put that on the transcript even though it would be from 15-20 credits. Although all other requirements would have satisfied by taking CLEP exams. The reason for asking this is that most people take CLEP exams to satisfy the requirements of the degree as its cost effective and study guides are widely available. Its still ambigous to me how COSC would handle this since they give only P/F for most exams whereas Excelsior gives grades for most of CLEP and all of DANTES and ECE.
