    Hi there,

    I wanted to find out about "Commonwealth Open University" http://www.commopu.org ... which is supposedly located in the British Virgin Islands. Is is legit?

    The name too sets off some alarm bells as it is too similar to the Open University UK.

    The net-whois did not come up with a definitive answer. Also, the layout is kind of suspecious, but then again, many universities - especially in the developing world - have sites that do not fully do justice with the school.

    Hi Mahmood:

    Uh oh.

    They do clearly deny any connection to the Open University on their site. But the BVI has no accreditation or other quality control mechanism. Now, help me with my arithmetic:

    a bachelors requires 120 "points" @ 20 "points" per course;
    a master's, an additional 40 "points";
    a doctorate, an additional 50 "points."

    If I'm reading this correctly, a "doctorate" can be had after doing 10 1/2 courses from the inception of a "bachelor's" degree.

    Uh oh.

    I looked at it some time ago and concluded that no, it isn't. It's not like one couldn't run a legitimate institution from the Caribbean, but their only address is a post office box and their phone number is in Miami. I expect their presence in BVI consists of nothing more than incorporation there, which would mean they're lying about their location. It's all downhill from there.

    The fact that they ostensibly offer so many postgraduate programmes, and even doctoral programmes, well, that's pretty silly.
