Mr/Ms Rodriguez: There are many, many threads devoted to Columbia Commonwealth U. Do a search and look at them. The ins and outs of Columbia Commonwealth U can be confusing, however, so don't hesitate to ask for clarifications and updates on what you find. Last I heard, they were sort of claiming accreditation from the Republic of Malawi. When I had personal contact with them, inquiring in my early ignorance about the possibility of doing a degree with them, they were both snotty and evasive. Had they been a thoroughly authentic Malawian university, I probably would have worked with them. There were just too many holes in their presentation. My faded-memory advice is to proceed with great skepticism. Best wishes, Janko.

I have just seen their website nothing about Malawi, but they have a license from Wyoming, one thing that calls may attention is that they have 3 or 4 teachers with Columbia Pacific PHDs... so i guess this school is absolutely a mill.. do you think the same as me?

    better than some!

Calling it "absolutely a mill" is probably extreme, in its earlier incarnation as Columbia Pacific it was a leader in non-traditional education. Currently as Columbia Commonwealth it does seem to be trying to provide some education.

Definately not one of your top ranked state "approved", but much above the Sheffield, et. al. group. Probably at least as good as Saint Regis (SRU is in Pennsylvania!!!!).

Columbia Pacific (Columbia Commonwealth's old name) was well known as the institution where several well-known authors and other TV "experts" received their doctorates, including John Gray (of "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" fame) and Barbara DeAngelis (star of relationship infomercials and author of several books).

Gray and DeAngelis used to be married to each other (she was his first wife, he was her third husband). Perhaps they should have read each others' books. :)

I notice that Dr Keith Seddon is their ancient philosophy guy; he is also on the faculty at Fairfax and (!) Warnborough.

    That cracks me up Tony!

Goes to show (I also know divorced marriage therapists) that it is one thing to have theoretical knowledge and another for it to work on a practical level. This moves beyond the fact that they both had unaccredited doctorates to the reality of much of therapy. The same phenomenon is seen in families of well educated and seemingly spiritual clergy where all sorts of problems go on. It is easier to talk about theological perspectives and realities and another thing to make them your reality.

There was a great book called "Beware the Talking Cure" (written by a Psychologist).

    Hi North,

You've hit it right on the head! I see the same thing among my colleagues at the colleges in which I have worked (as a conservative faculty, I'm a bit of an anomaly). Talk about people who live in a make-believe world of theory! We college professors are probably the worst of the lot. :)

And then there is the category of schools with religious exemption (but not, due to the flawed Wyoming law, restricted to religious degrees). The now notorious* Hamilton University, of course. But are there others in this category?
