wow, if you build it, they will come. I guess this isn't unlike Civil War or Medieval reenactors and the like. I wish they'd given better thought to their initials COW
It's important just to point out that this is a LARP (Live Action Role Play) thing. I was never a LARPer (though I do see them sword fighting in the park on nice days during the summer). But, I was a nerd who dabbled in D&D and other roleplaying games so I kind of get where people are coming from with this. Even if COW (awesome, by the way) offers a PhD, it would be your character earning said degree, not you. What I find interesting is when these things creep into real life. This isn't terribly far off from people who are involved in SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). Considering my old roommate from college spent an entire summer as an "apprentice" learning the art of sword making (using only historically accurate tools and equipment) I can't say that this strikes me as very odd. Then again, that probably says something about me more than anything else.
This is cool. I would totally go to Poland, seems like a fun event. The Grey School of Wizardry offers a DL option. The Grey School.
I've long been a fan of Southern culture - blues, hoodoo etc. - so, if I were to take a distance wizardry/magic course, (unlikely) I think I'd choose Cate Yronwode's Hoodoo Magic Spells correspondence course. Hoodoo Magic Spells Correspondence Course with cat yronwode I remember really liking "Mississippi Hoodoo Man," when it came out, back around 1986. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xImLoEC_F64 Always liked Junior Wells' Hoodoo Man Blues, too. Saw him and Buddy Guy live a few times. They had my kind of magic - Buddy still does. Sadly, Junior has passed. Here they are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5Z1wFqW0A4 J.
I think what has me (still) looking at Grey's is that I can't figure out whether they are completely serious or if there is a role play element at play here as well. I was content to believe this was a school for practitioners of various forms of "magick" and a place for New Age sorts to get educated. Hey, good for them, if Christians can have tons of bible colleges then there's no reason other religions can't get into the game. But their statement about Hogwarts (and their obvious mimicry of the Hogwarts "House" system) has me wondering.
and then there is the Mimbulus Mimbletonia Association (students of this wizarding school must be fluent in French) A Real-Life School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry Is Opening Next Year | The Huffington Post
There was a guy in my town whom I used to see quite often, making chain mail on the bus. He had a pair of needle-nose pliers in each hand and a bunch of small rings for the piece he was making. Rather like knitting, I guess. J.
because we all need a little magic in our lives https://www.coursera.org/learn/magic-middle-ages?ranMID=40328&ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-FGWux2R9Vh9PSa0vp88rew&siteID=TnL5HPStwNw-FGWux2R9Vh9PSa0vp88rew&utm_content=10&utm_medium=partners&utm_source=linkshare&utm_campaign=TnL5HPStwNw
