CNU For Professional Studies

While searching for a MBA in Accounting to meet the CPA requirements, a came accross with CNU since they have an accounting program and were DECT Accredited, the State where I live, stated that the would considerd the degree from this University, but what change my mind was the tuition. I wanted to share my experience with them. the Below are email exchange with an Admissions Representative.

I received your catalog and upon review, I notice that your university tuition is quite high, to be fair I decided to shop around a little. I requested several catologs from other universities that are at your level (DETC) and with the same platform and degrees offered like your school, and yours came up very high still.

Nevertheless, I went a step above and requested catalogs from Regional Accredited Universities which is most valuable to us students,and that are offering distance learnings degrees, and they came up about the same or at a lower tuition rate. Also will be able to apply for federal student loans.

There must be, a very good reason why (besides Accreditation from DETC, which is a step below Regional Accreditation) that your University tuition is so high? Therefore, I would love to hear those reasons (of course besides the ones that are mention on your catalog) to justify this tuition rates. Thanks.

"CNU is a private University and is mid-ranged in comparison to all other DETC schools and actually quite low in tuition cost compared to other private Universities. You cannot compare the cost of a state run school to a private University. And you cannot compare the cost of grandfathered courses offered through distance at regionally accredited schools to CNU. Have you looked at the cost of University of Phoenix, Regents, or Thomas Edison. CNU is a full degree granting University, very traditional in its academics, not a tech school or a trade school, and you never have to come to a campus. With CNU you have on-going one-on-one communication, support and guidance by real Professors, which is where the primary cost occurs. Also, CNU is the only University where you can receive a true Calculus based engineering degree entirely through distance".

"So, let me asked you a question, why after all this time (you received the catalog 3 months ago) and knowing that you cannot sit for the CPA exam with the CNU degree in Florida are you looking into CNU again if it just too expensive? There must be something about what we offer that interests you. You are obviously not finding what you are looking for in these other schools so doesn’t that in and of itself speak to the value of the degree program?"

I am glad you still remember me, actually I was not making a comparison with public Universities, I made with some private college as well, one example will be Upper Iowa University MBA Accounting, Regionally Accredited, total distance learning the only time that you may set foot on campus, and that if you want, is to get your diploma ( over 150 years old private school) about the same price range as yours.

Neverthless, your University can not compare itself with RA schools, as a matter of fact the degree from your school may "qualify" me for sitting in the CPA exam, but I wanted to be 100% sure no question ask accreditation. Another issue that I found at your school, that I was not able to get students loans (very important and yes, your are right I can not afford your payments plans).

At one point I was interested in your institution, the question about your tuition was not resolve at one time, So, I went ahead and ask, but went I did the math cost vs benifits(recently still shopping around), I change my mind , if I was going to pay $10,000.00 plus in a degree, it has to be RA, you see the problem with DETC they are considerd more technical oriented that Academic oriented and the Degree are not well accepted in Academia for future graduated studies.

But the bottom line, this is a buyer market. However, your University has small niche on the market that you may serve well, I looked at all the University you mention, with the exception of Thomas Edison the other are quite expensive, but this Universities, are more employers sponsor and oriented that most schools around in other words is too easy to get a degree.

I am not question the quality of your University, but still, I believe is too expensive for the type of accreditation. If you do your research like I did before making my final choice, you will agree with me.

"I don’t mean to overly debate the point but why would you think that CNU just blindly set our cost without referencing other schools?? We have all the catalogs of all the DETC schools and are perfectly aware of their costs. Have you looked at the cost of an MBA degree through ISIM?? CNU was one of the first degree granting institutions to seek accreditation through the DETC. This new emphasis for actual degrees granted through DETC schools has opened up the DETC and the regional bodies are finding it more and more difficult to deny our presence. Our courses and degrees are transferring all over because of our educational integrity and traditional curriculum. Nothing against Iowa but the cost of living is much less so it is all relative. We get more people telling us that we are not expensive. It really does depend".
