  1. Hello everyone,

I just took my first CLEP yesterday and wanted to thank everyone on this forum who have provided so much information.

Originally, to fulfill my Humanities requirements I had looked at many other courses but the suggestion came up to others to look at the CLEP language course.

Although my French was 20 years old through website browsing (www.paris.fr was a good one - Paris' portal) and listening to a 8-CD French set over the past few weeks it brushed me up enough to get a 67 scaled score....

Three things I found - don't know if others have experienced the same thing:

    1) The refresh rate on the screen must have been 60Hz because it was flickering a lot. Next time I may try to (discreetly) change it before the exam starts. With harsh fluorescent lights it's hard on the eyes.

    2) The quality of the audio for the sample questions was fine...but the actual audio questions were sometimes harder to make out. Some questions had audio only in the right ear - it would have been easier with 2 speakers if they alternated ears perhaps. Occasionally there was a pop or a click that could have presented a problem if it was in the wrong spot.

    3) I swear that in a couple of the questions there was more than one "appropriate" answer...for example:

    "What time is it"?

    1) I don't have a watch
    2) It's 25 degrees outside
    3) I like to go to the park
    4) I think it's 3pm

I went with #4, but #1 would also be appropriate.

Other than that, in and out in 70 minutes. If you have fluency or have taken several years in French, Spanish or German, I encourage you to take this exam.

    Next week...Humanities.

    Cheers,
    Mark

I personally find the 300 pitch font at 640x480 on a white background annoying. :) I wish it were configurable. I have to really sit back from the monitor to read the questions. I usually juts adjust the brightness down a bit and go from there.

Check out my "Unixman's CLEP Oddysey" thread for some pointers on this one ... ;) Good luck!

    Cheers.

  3. Thanks Unixman...

I have been following your thread. In fact, I'm probably about 30 days behind you so I can benefit from your experiences - in Jan I'm planning to take CLEP Mgt, CLEP Mktg, and Micro/Macroeconomics.

But first...time to focus on iambic pentameters, blank verse and lots of summary reading as well as matching authors to cards in the deck :)

I found a site that may be useful to some people out there looking for books online...

I have found that on nearly every exam I come across one or more of these. I think they may be some of the unscored questions (the ones they are trying out for future exams). After 29 of these exams I can say that I expect to see a couple of vague ones every now and then.

    Congrats on your score!

Of course, there are plenty of incorrect ways to say "I don't have a watch" in French. After 20 years, how can you remember if it's Je n'ai pas un montre, Je n'ai pas une montre, or Je n'ai pas de montre? ;)

  6. That was my thought as well - sometimes it was hard to hear (like it was encoded in 8-bit mono or something) so I would have lost some of the specifics.

Other than the audio quality, the scenarios were quite realistic.
