Has anyone here passed a CLEP foreign language exam at the 12 credit level and received complete credit for it? I'm curious because I was thinking of taking the Spanish exam.

  2. I took and passed French at the 12-credit level (credits granted by Excelsior) in December. Needed 62 and scored 67. I think Spanish has a higher cut score for the 12 credit requirement.

My French is reasonably solid but I hadn't taken any courses or spoken French regularly in about 20 years. I spent about 2 weeks listening to advanced tourist CDs and doing some light reading on French websites, but nothing strenuous.

If you're fluent you should have absolutely NO trouble getting 12 credits. For foreign language speakers this is even easier than Here's To Your Health...

    Cheers,
    Mark

I'd classify my Spanish as "conversational, but know how to read and write." When I took the practice test, I had my son read the parts I would have been listening to during the real test, and I only missed 2 questions. The 12 credit score I believe is 66. I guess I might as well take it. It's good to know Excelsior counts all 12.

    Thanks

  4. No problem - if you you're using the Official CLEP Study Guide for your sample test it's VERY much along the lines of what you should expect - including the picture ads. On the French exam there were also examples of a TV broadcast (audio only), weather forecast, radio ad, etc. I didn't have a person speaking the parts so the audio CDs got my ear reattuned to the language.

The only thing that I found a bit disconcerting during the test was that some conversations had a pop or click in it and the audio quality was less than stellar (maybe a machine issue, maybe how the audio was sampled). Some segments had both people speaking in only one ear which was unnatural. Ironically, the sample questions at the start of the exam had great audio quality.

Also make sure you know how to adjust the volume level (by going through the sample part) before you start - once a question has started you can't raise or lower the volume.

I'm sure that if you can read and write and your comprehension (as you're not speaking only listening skills count) is good you'll do fine. No issue whatever with Excelsior accepting the 12 credits....good luck!

    Just a tip...

During the listening stage, you may feel like you're not doing very well, but end up passing it with no trouble at all. I thought I had failed both Spanish and french the first time I took the tests, but passed both (albeit for only six credits on the French).

I wonder if I can get credit for my knowledge of Russian (and Ukrainian) :D I have native fluency!

  9. Stanislav - I believe the answer would be "da" - just not via CLEP.

There are other tests out there (hopefully someone will respond) that will give you credit for language knowledge, and I'm sure that Russian would be one of them.

    Foreign Language CLEP

I passed the Spanish CLEP with a 76 and got the 12 credits. I almost aced it according to the test administrator. I only missed one question and finished in an hour. I would have finished sooner but I had to wait on the computer.

It is really not that difficult. It is very basic Spanish. Matter of fact the test administrator had to tell me to stop laughing because I couldn’t believe how easy it was.

If the Spanish CLEP is the one you are going to take. I would suggest maybe try your local library for resources. They sometimes have Spanish audiotapes you can listen to that have English translations. Also, they sometimes have conversational classes.

The CLEP guide is very good for the written portion. But remember there is an audio portion too and this is what usually gets everyone.

    Good Luck.

I passed the Spanish CLEP with an 80% and got the 12 credits. It is relatively easy and the spanish conversation is slow.

Which test to take depends on which college you're enrolled in.

At Excelsior College, you could get 16 credits for Russian and 16 for Ukrainian with the New York University exams:

or alternatively 12 credits for each of them, but much more cheaply, with the FLATS from Brigham Young University:

I took the Spanish CLEP a couple of months ago and passed it with 80. It's a really piece of cake if you master the language a little bit. Much easier than any NYU's foreign language test, to pass wich you need to be able to write quite well in the language of choice.
