I'm considering taking the CLEP test for fulfilling the English requirement
    at TESC. I am seeking advice on the pro's and con's of which test to take;
the subject or the general exam. I understand that the essay will need to be
    included with either test.

I will be using past credits and certificates that I currently hold to fill
the majority of the degree requirement, but I still need to fulfill the
English requirement. I am late forties with average english skills. Which
test would be best for me in regards to ease of preparation and testing?

    Thanks in advance.

    Bill-
To continue from our posts on AED. The only CLEP exam on english is a general exam which is available with or without essay. According to your response TESC requires an essay so there is no choice. The only subject exam even colse is English Literature which is an equine of a different hue. I doubt very much if the English Lit. exam would satisfy an English 101-102 requirement. If you wish to confirm this the URL for the college board is www.collegeboard.org they list evey CLEP exam available there. I realize that it can be a bit confusing, it took me a while to figure it all out myself when I took a number of CLEPS. - Roger

OK, now I am confused. I am currently holding a CLEP booklet that was sent by CLEP, or the "college board", that shows English Composition (general)and Freshman College Composition (subject). Both have the option of the essay or not. When I checked with TESC just last week, they stated that either exam met the English requirement, and that each exam was good for 6 credit hours. My choice on which I wanted to use. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough with my question, or has the subject exam been discontinued?

If both of the aforementioned exams are indeed available, my original question refers to which is the easier of the two? Sorry for the confusion. As I said earlier, I ain't that schooled in english!!

    Thanks for the help!!!

Your best bet is the General English Comp w/Essay. Get a study guide by either COMEX or REA. The test consists of grammar-related multiple choice questions, and one simple essay. If you have a reasonable command of English, you should have no problem.

I personally took the Subject exam (Freshman College Composition) because that is
what my school required. It was not all that difficult, and not much different than some
General practice exams I've seen. If you have a choice I'd pick the General exam, just
because they tend to be easier, but I don't think you'd have a problem with either.

    Bill-
I have once again outsmarted myself. You are quite correct that there are two useable exams both with essay available. When I took my tests I don't remember the subject exam being available. Or perhaps, at that time it would not be accepted, anyway, in my experence the subject exams were easier on a per credit basis than the general exams if you didn't have a pretty wide ranging grasp of the subject.
