CLEP and transcripts (plus credit bank?)

    Hi again,

I would love to know if any schools grant CLEP credit and the transcript looks like every other "US History I" class (for example). I think it looks much nicer and sometimes can affect whether or not they get accepted (even when the school knows where they came from). People have posted before that some schools want the credits to go through a different school before they will accept them. My current school is the same way with English Composition (and others). They won't accept those CLEP scores for credit, but they will accept the straighterline course and will also accept the credit from a school where you've sent the CLEP.

I'm also looking into TESC credit banking, but not sure how to do it. I have 30 state-accredited courses (pre-pharmacy/pharmacy tech) that I really want to be able to use, even if it's just as electives. Wonder of wonders, my new school gives TESC full faith since they are near each other - the only caveat is that you have to get an AA or AS at TESC for them to give you carte blanche (otherwise they eval course-by-course). I'm willing to just go for the bank (without enrolling) just on the off chance that they would accept some of them for transfer

After searching, I found on this board that you pay $400/yr (non-military) and you can send lots of transcripts to be "banked." They issue a shiny new transcript to you and your next school. Do they show how you got the credits?

    Example:

    TESC:
    Anatomy A- 1cr date

    VS.

    TESC:
    Anatomy A- 1cr date
(ps, this course wasn't taken here! red flag!)

Could mean a big difference in how a school accepts the credits.

    Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my university. They would not accept a CLEP for a particular humanities requirement, but they would let me take it from another school's CLEP and transfer it in. However, they would accept a DSST exam for the same humanities requirement; go figure. Even my adviser thought it was a strange requirement, but it is what it is. Maybe you should see if they'll take a DSST.

My school does list the CLEP and DSST's I took for credit on my transcript, although it also lists the course equivalent that they were applied to. I submitted CLEP and DSST scores to all my undergrad schools, and on all my transcripts it listed the exams as exams and not class equivalents, unfortunately. Those schools were Central Texas College, Park University, University of Maryland University College, Anne Arundel Community College, and the school I got my undergrad degree from, Southern Illinois University.

    Good luck!

I know, it's so weird and convoluted! When even the testing center is like "see if XYZ takes it and then just transfer it," it's downright silly! :D Oh well, I will ask around and report back what I find.

Thanks for the DANTES idea, I will ask the testing center if they accept and ask enrollment how the transcript looks.

This is going to blow up in your face. You can't launder credits.

The best way to use CLEP credits (or any credit) is to find out YOUR college's policy and work within those guidelines to the fullest. Perhaps they don't accept English Comp, but will they accept another exam for electives? You still save just as much time and money applying the credit to another area of your degree plan. Use the policy to your advantage, but don't try to go around it.

(Credit banking will say NC = non class credit, and you'll need to produce original transcripts from CLEP before any college will award credit anyway)

You make a lot of good points here. The complications are there because I go to school A in WA, but will be moving to go to school B in the northeast. Sadly, their policies (on anything) don't match up 100% so I'm having to figure stuff out via email with both institutions. My current school will take infinite amounts of CLEP credit; the new one will only take 32 credits worth AND won't take any once you've reached 64 credits from any source. So it gets extremely dicey at times.

If I get 64 credits and then transfer, then decide to take a course at Harvard after I enroll (or any other course) will they toss one of my CLEP results? If I apply and start the transfer process now, will that lock me into the non-resident tuition rate indefinitely? I don't have answers for these, and they are taking their sweet time getting back to me about it. It took them ten days to get back to me about whether they required Essays for English Comp CLEP exams. :(

I would just go ahead and start school at the new one, but it's the difference in $500/class and $2000/class (literally). Biding my time will save me thousands over the second half of my bachelor's, so in the meantime, I am looking at more ways to deal with cost.

But yeah, I've abandoned the credit bank idea. I don't think it will help with the types of credits I have for transfer.
