What is the cheapest, 100% online Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing? MFA in Creative Writing?

Last June, University of Louisiana-Monroe filed an LOI with the Louisiana Board of Regents to offer an online MFA in creative writing. Filing status is shown here.

UL-M briefly advertised an upcoming online MFA on the university DL web site, although little more has been since disclosed. The UL-M English department web site also mentions an MFA online that's under discussion.

Just a hunch, but if online course costs are any indicator, this program may fall in the bargain category.

A graduate-level certification from an accredited school, rather than a master's degree. The certification is usually 12 or 15 hours, rather than 36 or more.

I don't know that there is such an animal as a grad certificate in creative writing, through distance learning.

There are. I noticed a few in the UK, and the University of Denver has a certificate program as well. Undergrad certificates in creative writing are more common.

Excellent. I will keep my eye on this. I emailed them to see what the status of the program is.

I wrote the dean about this program as I am not 100% happy in the MFA online program I am in, and unfortunately it seems that the State of Louisiana has a moratorium on new degrees. However, the dean seemed hopeful that it would be lifted in the near future. I will keep my fingers crossed!

How about this program from the University of California

Two 10-day residencies per year in beautiful Palm Springs area are required.
(Currently Palm Springs is surrounded by snow capped mountains).

There are a number of "low residency" MFA programs sprinkled around the country. The idea of choosing one so that your residency might be in a fun part of the country (whatever that means to you) so as to make it almost like a vacation is a great idea. Right now I could use a blast of warm weather.

Does anyone know of a university that offers graduate coursework in Writing or Creative Writing (besides WNMU and National University)? I'm looking for graduate coursework in Magazine Writing, Non Fiction Writing or coursework similiar to that.

    Thank you in advance!

If you clink on the link in my first posting to this thread you'll find a list of all the low-residency MFA programs in the USA. I'm betting that most of them would allow you to take one or two courses without being enrolled in a degree program.
