    "
Authorities say conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed by a single shot in an apparent targeted attack during an outdoor event Wednesday at Utah Valley University. Kirk co-founded the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA and was a close ally of President Donald Trump.

“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation,” said Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. “I want to be very clear this is a political assassination.”

Authorities are seeking a new person of interest in the shooting and have no one in custody as of late Wednesday, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the matter who was not authorized to discuss the situation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. "

A public assassination, even of someone understandably reviled by millions, only increases polarization in a way that's bad for everyone—especially the marginalized people that Kirk's loathsome rhetoric sought to harm.

He leaves behind a wife and two kids who don't know anything about his work as a political commentator, they just know him as dad. His politics sucked, but murder or assassination can never be condoned. It's corrosive to our democracy. As an aside, I'm a little worried the reason they arrested and released two different suspects (and now don't have anyone in custody) is because of Kash Patel's hollowing out of the FBI who would normally be lead in a case like this.

Perhaps, although that's tough to say for sure, especially so early on.

One thing is certain, though: as a majority Republican state, the Trump administration won't try to use this as an excuse to send troops to occupy Utah as they would have had this happened in a majority Democratic state.

Trump has already said how he wants to crack down on “left-wing violence” and will use this to justify increased attacks on anyone he deems “left-wing”. His Gestapo, ICE, will likely start targeting more people. Charlie’s final gift to Trump.

    From Iseael media:

Today a different kind of soldier fell.
He does not serve in the IDF.
He did not live or was born here, he is not Israeli, but he was one of the most important soldiers of the Jewish people in the world.
Charlie Kirk, 31 years old, husband, father of two children, and a soldier in the Israel Public Relations Army.
Charlie knew how to eliminate his haters with his intelligence.
Kill them. Give them an answer to every question.
Blow up every theory. Peel the lie from their truth.
He did it on an automatic, he was a propaganda machine.
Today our public relations took a bullet in the main artery.
Charlie Kirk was a presenter for the Jewish people, and he is not Jewish at all.
He fought a war that was not his, fought and always won.
These are our haters, they cannot defeat us with intelligence, so they try like this, with terrorism.

Sometimes a threat, written on a sign at a demonstration, becomes reality.

The State of Israel and the entire Jewish people salute you, Charlie.

You didn't cite where that steaming pile came from, but it's obvious that was specifically from rightwing Israeli media.

There are right wing media in Israel?! But ... weren't they themselves victim of some right wing guy, like, in Germany in the 30s?

All major Israeli media outlets are reporting the assassination of Charlie Kirk, emphasizing his status as a strong friend of Israel. Regardless of which channel I check, the coverage is unanimous in mourning this loss.
    Jerusalem Post Coverage
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on X/Twitter:
    > “Kirk was murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom. He fought the lies and stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization. We lost an incredible human being. His boundless pride in America and his valiant belief in free speech will leave a lasting impact. Rest in peace.”
    Investigation Update
The FBI is currently examining the rifle and ammunition, which reportedly bear inscriptions. Investigators are also reviewing security footage of the suspected shooter, described as a possible college-aged male.
    Speculation and Motives
Media commentary so far ranges from theories of a professional hit to suggestions of an attempt to implicate a specific political movement. Analysts note that Kirk was widely targeted by various groups, from anti-Israel activists to trans-rights extremists, reflecting his polarizing public presence.

Violence, regardless of the reason, is wrong. I'm sorry he was killed. I hope they find the shooter and that person is held accountable.

    From Jill Filipovic on Slate:

Kirk’s killing is far from the first act of political violence in the last few years, and the ideologies fueling this violence have spanned the political spectrum. There was a right-wing plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. There was the Jan. 6th insurrection. There was the hammer attack on Paul Pelosi in which former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was also a target. There was the murder of Melissa Hortman, the Democratic speaker of the Minnesota House, along with her husband, and the related shooting of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife. There was the arson set at the home of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. There was the shooting at the CDC. There was the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Well before all of this, there was an enormous number of attacks on abortion clinics and abortion providers, including several murders, and the shooting of Republican Rep. Steve Scalise.

This is nothing new, and it comes from many directions.

    Violence is wrong,
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/three-historically-black-colleges-universities-162608074.html
Three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have gone into lockdown after “terroristic threats" were directed at the campus, according to local reports.

Alabama State University, Hampton University and Virginia State University locked down the morning of Thursday, Sept. 11, after unspecified threats were made against all three campuses.

Virginia State shared an “urgent alert” at 8:30 a.m. ET, declaring the campus closed and advising students, faculty, and staff to check their emails. In a statement to local 8News, a school representative said the closure was “due to a potential threat" and that students who are on campus should remain indoors.

Well, we're smack dab in the middle of what Robert A. Heinlein's Future History called "The Crazy Years".

He said some things I disagreed with, and also said a lot of things that were objectively accurate and couldn't be handled by the people who took offense to it.

I saw the actual video of the shot. Just horrific. Nobody deserves that simply for having a different viewpoint. That and the celebrating of his opponents does no good, not even for those celebrating, they just don't understand that yet. They likely never will.

In the end, he may have been reviled by millions, but he was also revered by millions. I have no dog in that fight. I just saw a young man with a wife and young children senselessly murdered in front of the general public over his opinions. Even if you thought everything he ever said was wrong, nothing about what happened to him was right.

It seems like many have a short memory. Charlie was inciting political violence in his discourse. He advocated for the killing of minority groups, amongst other things.

This rhetoric is dangerous, and I am tired of seeing these sob pieces acting like he was a saint. You can both condone this killing and also condone him and his discourse.

I know very little about what what he "incited and advocated" for. I doubt that I'd agree with much of what he said though.

I do love this country. One of the things I love about this country is the saying that I may not agree with what he said but I absolutely defend his right to say it. I'm also very sorry and sad that his two little kids lost their daddy.
