I apologize if this has been asked before but has anybody here attended California Coast University. I'm considering it and I'd like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks

The search engine in this forum just found more than 300 postings on CCU. That might be a place to start.

    Re: Sorry I asked

To the point that the best place to start around here before asking anything is the search engine, John's right, MoMo. But in your defense, one need only read a handful of threads around here before running into comments that said search engine is broken... or is at least dysfunctional for threads much older than maybe a year ago. So, it's not a badge of dishonor, MoMo that you didn't think to go to the search engine first.

In John's defense, MoMo, those, like John, who have been around here for a long time sometimes get a little tired of people -- specifically newbies, I suppose -- asking questions that have been asked so many times before that to the old-timers starts to feel kinda' ridiculous.

The partial solution to the problem, I think -- and this is intended as a huge hint to Chip, et al -- is to FIX THE SEARCH ENGINE.

But that's just my humble opinion.

In any case, MoMo, the bottom line is this: Though it clearly made you feel a little bad for a half second, Bear is a helluva nice guy who, as you'll begin to learn as you keep reading around here, is perhaps distance learning's biggest (or at least most well-known) player; and he's all about helping people, not making them feel bad. You'll see.

    Welcome, by the way.

    Hey MoMo,

Let us know what you decide to do on your schooling OR if you decide to look in another direction after you check out those old posts on CCU. There's a lot here. It takes a while to get to know the place :p

I've learned tons. I know you will too.

If you want mo responses then it helps to ask mo specific questions. :)

One thing you need to know is that CCU is not a regionally accredited school. If you don't know what that means then you have some work to do.

California Coast University has been a popular on-and-off topic on Degreeinfo since its inception. CCU has been around since 1974, since it was started as an unaccredited correspondence school in Santa Ana, California. During its first 20 years, it was a viable alternative for those needing a legal (but not necessarily accredited) degree for personal or professional enrichment.

Opinions on the legitimacy of California Coast have ranged from those who claimed that it was as good as many fully accredited universities to those who claimed that it was a diploma mill. The truth was actually somewhere in between. Although I and others have criticized CCU for some millish-like actions during its first few years of operation, I never would have classified the CCU of the 1990s-2000s as a mill. Degreeinfo has had many posters who have stated that they have degrees from CCU and were satisified that the degree was useful for meeting thier goals.

CCU was recently accredited by the Distance Learning and Training Council (DETC), a recognized accediting body. Although CCU had to give up its popular doctoral programs in order to achieve its accreditation, the stamp of legitimacy that accreditation offered was well worth the effort. If the DETC is able to begin accrediting doctoral programs, CCU may, in the future, reinstate is doctoral degrees.

If you are considering a CCU degree, your decision will depend upon your goals. If you are considering a career where a regionally accredited degree is the norm (such as in schools or colleges), then CCU would not be your best choice. A degree from a state university may be comparably priced and would be much more widely accepted. If, however, you are looking for a degree to meet personal (self-enrichment) education goals or are in a career where a regionally accredited degree is not necessary, CCU might be a good fit.

    Re: Re: Ccu

If, as decimon has said, you're not certain about some of these issues then you should scroll to the very top of this page and click on the tab entitled "articles." There's lots of very good information right here if you're willing to just barge around a bit.
Do some reading and then ask some more questions.

    Momo,

No apologies needed. As Tony points, CCU is a nationally accredited university and as you can see, there is much discussion on it.

There are several posters here that also have obtained education from CCU.

I enjoyed it and I also have my brother pursuing his BS in management through them now. Although the cost has increased since accreditation, it is still a great value and a good school for distance learning.

Let me say now that RA would have more utility and would be the better route, however, in most cases, a RA school will also be more expesive. Check the State schools as they could be close in comparison.

For a undergrad work, especially if you are not deep in your field of work currently, I would suggest seeking RA. If it is of a urgent desire to get a degree in a relatively fast manner by testing out of courses via CLEP , DANTES etc. you may want to check out the following site:

    www.BAin4weeks.com ( I hope this is correct ).

As for CCU, I am a proud graduate of them and I recently had the opportunity to visit their location and staff, admin etc. and had my graduation there. A great group of people and i feel close to the school for doing so. I again am proud of where CCU is going.

My 3 cents for you. Good luck in your search.

I've contacted CCU a couple of times. They are very quick to send information and very good at answering questions. You cannot pay by the course, however. They have three different payment plans, which still seems odd to me, BUT they are not the only school out there doing this. (still seems odd to me) :D

OH, and unlike some other schools, once CCU has your contact information, they DO NOT hound you to death. I talked to some schools where I finally had to tell them that they were just too hard a sell for my tastes. CCU didn't do that to me.

Thanks so much. Degreeinfo has been very helpful to me professionally. I like to help when I can. My parents and my church have taught me to be as courteous, kind, respectful, and professional as possible. I don't always succeed, but I try ;)

Gracias por sus palabras tan bondadosas. I hope that you feel the same way after I tell you that I lived in Chile for two years :)

    Thank You

Thank you for your replies. FYI- I did do a search before asking my question but my search results were not as good as the ones posted here.

I’m a mid-career professional with very little college credit. I’m guessing about 24 hours. For me completing a bachelor’s degree is more of a formality then anything else. And I’d like to complete it as quickly as possible.

I’m an IT Business Analyst with 20 years of experience and I’m interested in getting a BA or BS in Business Administration. I know that I have been passed over for positions that I’ve applied for because I don’t have the degree. So as long as a DETC degree is accepted by employers, that’s all I need.

I’ve looked into state schools but I don’t qualify for most of the degree completion programs that they offer. I checked a few of the private schools including DePaul and National Louis University and really liked their programs but they’re expensive.

CCU is the least expensive and the most convenient option that I’ve found so far. I just want to make sure that when I apply for job that CCU will not be looked at in a negative manner.

Thanks for your time and advice.
    Mo
