This just in from the new CCU website:

"The DETC is an educational association located in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1926, and has become the agency that sets the standard for all distance education institutions."

    http://www.calcoast.edu/CCU/index.cfm/accreditation/

Is it true that the DETC sets the standard for ALL distance education institutions? That's news to me, I believe...

Not true, stick with CCU's Giftware items - a better value!

Warning: The University does not hold formal graduation ceremonies!

Educational association and a nationally recognized accrediting agency!

DETC sets standard to All DL Institutions that choose to be accredited by its Accrediting Commission.
The DETC is a voluntary, non-governmental, educational organization that operates a nationally recognized accrediting association, the DETC Accrediting Commission.

The DETC Accrediting Commission defines, maintains, and promotes educational excellence in distance education institutions. Its mission is to promote, by means of standard-setting, evaluation, and consultation processes, the development and maintenance of high educational and ethical standards for education and training programs delivered through distance learning.
    Vision

The DETC aspires to be the preeminent accrediting association for distance education and training institutions worldwide. It aims to be a resource for distance learning institutions, encouraging them to strive for excellence in fulfilling their missions. Through voluntary assessment and high standards for academic quality,

Its the nature of the DL provider whose students are all over the world.
I think this is not practical to have these formal graduation ceremonies for this type of university.
But I'm sure they can be arranged at students expanse.

All one needs is to contact the university and pay for their flight or wait till their visit to CA Disney Land, then stop by the university and have some pictures taken wile they rent or purchase some regalia.

Don't get me wrong, I value real formal ceremonies and when My children graduated from their universities I proudly watched and filmed them attending and receiving their diplomas.
I do think that official graduation ceremony seals the achievement of their hard 4 years work.

Its memorable moment and for graduates to be a moment they all wait for.

So the CCU website is exaggerating the role of the DETC in distance education?

It's called marketing. For those of us who aren't business majors the word is bullshi...oops, can't say that.

Imagine turning on your TV and seeing a sleek black sedan zooming down a deserted highway, then parked in a post-industrial urban landscape surrounded by unnaturally beautiful and stylish people as a sonorous voice intones -- "The 2010 Roadrage, setting the standard in luxury automobiles!"

    Santa ana

I've driven by thier office building, it look like a Postcard Picture from Mexico City with all the trash and homeless people hanging around and sounds of gun shots going off all the time.

Yes, CCU is exaggerating the role of DETC outside of its own member institutions. DETC plays no role in "setting the standard" for the online programs at my university, nor does it for the regionally accredited distance learning programs that chose not to seek accreditation by DETC.
