Okay...So here is the deal. I've got a BS in Christian Ministry. That basically qualifies me to marry and bury you. And neither of those pays that well

I'm trying to figure out what to 'do with my life' outside of my ministerial pursuits. I've posted here before about Criminal Justice type stuff, including Digital Forensics. I've got numerous years of private security, including working for and leading in some huge organizations, but yet I start at the bottom in a new company. I am certainly more experienced than pounding the beat all day, every day. I'm up for a 'promotion' to Loss Prevention Specialist for a major international entertainment company, but I'm not even sure that would satisfy me for that long. The next step after that is Investigations, which would be interesting, but not sure that is it either.

Basically, I'm looking for something that I can complete and actually use to provide for my family. Everyone wants to get rich quick, I guess. I just want to have some sort of TRAINING that qualifies me for something. I've looked into LE, I've looked into Motorcycle Mechanics and Small Engine Repair. I guess the problem is that I guess I'm just unsure.

I'm sure I'm not the only one and this is pretty hard to put into words. If I could, I'd just go to school forever. My wife may not like that, though! ha.

I'm not sure what I'm expecting, but I know this is a bunch of wise and caring folks here..thought I'd throw this out here.

WIRED reports that Blackwater is re-hired to protect New Orleans after hurricane Gustav re-destroys the city. So, Blackwater is looking for:

"current/active/licensed/registered armed security officer," but "only from the following states: OR, WA, CA, NV, NM, AZ, TX, FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, IL, OK."

Also, if you're a cop, AND carry a semi-automatic, they want your ass too. Cops with revolver only are not needed at this time.

    3 Wheels,

Look at the opportunities in the US Government.
The positions pay well and there are great benefits for the family.

    Examples: Border Patrol
    Homeland Security
    IRS

These three agencies are hiring security people every day.

Look on their web site: www.usajobs.gov
Plug in the job you want and the location where you want to work....

    Good Luck, Jim

"Pounding the beat" would probably be the most interesting experience of your life. I did the glamorous stuff when I was younger, got bored with it, and now I'm back on the beat where I love it; never the same thing each day.

    That aside, if you're interested in staying with corporate security there are some graduate options;

    Bellevue University - http://bellevue.edu/cs/ContentServer?c=buDegree&pagename=bu%2FbuLayout&p=1172638670631&cid=1177033759858

    University of Denver - http://universitycollege.du.edu/grad/smgt/degreeplan.cfm?degreeID=294

    American Military University - http://www.amu.apus.edu/Academics/Degree-Programs/program.htm?progid=4365&program_type=Masters

    Bruce,

I'm not looking for glamour, per se. I'm more interested in $$ and utilization of a greater portion of my brain and leadership capabilities. I don't want to run the world by any means. In my context right now, pounding the beat pretty much entails doing almost nothing besides telling people where the restroom is and how to get places. I understand not everything is like this and my salary is directly commesurate with the area that I now live in.

I do enjoy aspects of private security. I've looked into at least the APU/AMU link that you posted previously when I worked for major medical facility. I was quickly put into the highest position that I could go there, got bored/tired of waiting for someone to die and/or retire. Now, I'm basically waiting on the machine to process my application and survey information so I can interview.

Basically, if I were to continue education in this field, do you think that more doors would open? I have the experience and skills, I guess just not the education?

Others, thanks for the replies. I'll keep checking USAJOBS.com

Have you considered applying for any of the union based apprenticeship programs? A journeyman in any of the trades will have great job security and full benefits. Many link college work in with the trade training, and perhaps some of your credit will get you advanced standing in that regard. In my area (Illinois) the admission is pretty competitive, however, if you know someone....
Many of our friends are graduates of apprenticeship programs, and while some get a bad rap, the friends of ours who are hard working have ALL excelled into management positions and earn a much more comfortable living than my husband and I.

I've met people who work for UPS and DHL - you may have to work weird hours but good pay and benefits (including free travel on company aircraft).
    FedEx might be similar.

If you deliver you get to meet all kinds of potential employers.

Thanks to all who have replied. I'm grateful that you all took the time to help me out! Rock on!

Here goes another train of thought:

Is that anything that I can do to supplement my experience and semi-unrelated education in the field of private security that would make me more enticing to those looking at my resume? I've looked at the Master's programs, and they would be great. I'm just thinking more for the short term. If I want to get into investigations with my present employer, is there anything that I can do to enhance my standing/resume? Would a grad cert be effective?

    Cheers!
