I was wondering what you think about DSc-IA program offered by Capitol College. Is there anybody here who is going through this program? Looks like a very strong IA focused program. How do you think the graduates fare after the program to teach both Information systems and Information Assurance ? Do you think this degree is better than a DBA or PhD in Management (with IT focus) ?
"Better". This depends on what you're looking to do with your life. It's certainly better if you want to do technical work. It's probably not better if you want to be management. It's certainly not better if you want to be a business prof. Since the school is in Maryland and local grads are proximal to the DC Metro area, I'll guarantee they're employed. Distance workers will depend on what metro area they're in.
This is the situation.. I have MS in Management from TAMU-Commerce. I teach technology courses in a local Business school part-time. So i am thinking and looking for an answer from experts here if a PhD in management or DSc in IA makes sense. I am not thinking about teaching full-time. I work in Technology specifically in Security related areas. I might think of starting on my own in a few years from now. Another school i am looking at is UMUC's Doctor of Management. In either case, my dissertation will be Technology realted.
Well what I'll tell you from personal experience in chatting with the program chair is this: 1. You need a professional cert like the CISSP to be considered for admission according to their admissions standards. 2. It's expected that you're going to come to the table with significant infosec skill to begin with and not having a Masters in Infosec prior to application will put some additional scrutiny on your portfolio. It's not a management program, it's a technical one. I was advised that while I'd be considered for admission with a MBA & CISSP, that candidates with a stronger technical background in infosec as evidenced by exactly what they're looking for in a technical masters and certification with significant infosec experience get first nod. I work in higher education in the D.C. area. Between the two of these, since you are interested in information security, I would definitely go with Capitol College's program. UMUC's program is fine for those in business administration, but it's not at all designed to accommodate your specific interests.
Thanks for the inputs Steve. I am not sure how a DSc will be seen by acedemia to teach IA/Security and Information Science now and in the future. Do you think this program is a little too narrow?
No. I hire computer science adjuncts and find it's pretty hard to find ones who (1) can teach; (2) speak and write English well; and (3) have doctorates that are even close. In fact, it's tempting to go to Capitol College's next graduation ceremony and hand out business cards to all the newly minted DSc holders.
Capitol College's Doctorate in Information Assurance is a solid degree, but the school itself not really popular nor infamous.
That's true. They definitely have a "who's that?" factor. But that's a lot better than an "oh no, them" factor.

I got into Grenoble DBA program in France. DSc program from Capitol College looks solid. If you are interested in the program, it might serve you well. Capitol College and Dakota State DSc programs were next in my list. I decided on Grenoble due to their Triple Crown Accreditation (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA) and they prefer IT Management related research focus.
Any info about this program would be appreciated. I requested more info from the website and even called and left a message but still have not heard back. Im wondering how competitive the admissions are, I have several solid years of IT experience with some Info Sec mixed in but not full time Info Sec work. Have masters degrees in IT, IT Management, and working on #3 in Info Sec. 21 IT certs but none of the ones listed on the site. Wondering if I should bother applying for if its pretty much pointless due to competition like DSU is.
