Is Trump threatening to cut SNAP to force Democrats to give up their fight to prevent a rise in health insurance premiums, or will he actually go through with it on November 1st? Many people who are on SNAP are elderly or disabled. Many other recipients are currently working or recently lost their jobs. The fact that someone can have a full-time job and still qualify for SNAP is an issue in and of itself. If someone wants a second job or a better-paying job right now, there are more job seekers than job openings. Additionally, furloughed federal workers are already lining up at food banks, and the food banks are struggling to fulfill the need because Trump canceled food shipments to food banks. If Trump follows through with not distributing SNAP funds, this will be the first time in history that a president has canceled SNAP/food stamps because of a government shutdown. Previous administrations, including Trump, have found ways to fund SNAP. Mike Johnson is lying when he says that there are legal obstacles preventing Trump from releasing the $6 billion in USDA reserves, but since when did Trump care about the law? If the churches, especially the mega churches, don't step up, they need to be taxed just like any other business.
I see it as republicans starving the poor. I know they will try and spin it to blame democrats, but the King himself rejected using the emergency funds put in place for this very purpose. Many of those on SNAP also need the healthcare subsidies democrats are fighting to keep in the CR.
Yes, I believe that is a big part of it. I think another part is that Republicans in general have not been big fans of food assistance. It is horribly sad. Most recipients are children and the elderly that can't really work, 60% was the figure I've heard. That's 40% children and 20% elderly. Then a good chunk of the remaining left do work but just don't make enough money to pay for food. It's a pretty large percentage of the total population on SNAP, something like 12%.
The federal government won't raise the minimum wage. My state doesn't even believe in a minimum wage; we're just forced by federal law to follow the federal minimum wage. When we give tax breaks to billionaires and millionaires, that money generally isn't spent on giving raises to the working class. It's reinvested to make wealthy shareholders even wealthier. I hope to see the MAGAts who aren't poor out here helping people in November since they believe that assistance should be handled by non-profit organizations. This is your chance to shine.
The Big Beautiful Bill has decimated healthcare here in the USA. First will be government support of ACA premiums. But they are wiping out Medicaid and even Medicare these cuts won't reach their full potential until after the midterms. Healthcare should be a human right rather than a privilege for those that can afford it. This will eventually impact everyone because prices for everyone will go up because so many people won't be able to pay their medical bills. Rural hospitals will have to close. It's going to be a disaster for everyone except for the super rich folks that get their big tax break. They will be able to afford another vacation mansion while the people are dying because they can't afford healthcare or food. We can thank the Republicans for that and for termination of SNAP.
I know someone who owns a business and adjuncts. She is trying to find a job with good health insurance benefits because she'll no longer be able to afford to purchase from the Marketplace with the Republican cuts. Libertarians will tell you to get a part-time job with UPS, but UPS is laying off 48,000 employees. This economy is lovely.

I saw a bunch of interviews of mothers on SNAP. They worked but couldn't make enough money to buy food without SNAP. They didn't know what they were going to do except go hungry even worse so their kids can continue eating. It was heartbreaking. My wife grew up in Taiwan dirt poor. She and her siblings had no shoes and went to bed hungry almost every night. Taiwan was a very poor third world country back then.
