Yeah, I did all of my coursework with Nations under the new program (proctored exams, more research papers, textbooks etc.) I just wrote them an e-mail asking that if Nations does get the green light this time will they do their students the service of allowing them to take additional coursework etc. so that they can grandfather their previous work, add a little more and then therefore "re-graduate" with a valid degree. It is a shame to miss out for the sake of a few months. I think that would help those who have been waiting so long and also I have heard other schools have done the same for their students who recently graduated right before accreditation nod.
If not, I will do the MDiv
This is all predicated on the loose (and I mean loose) hope that Nations might be on track this time. Time will tell.

latebloomer, "valid" is not really the correct term to use. You have a valid degree. What is probably more accurate is to think in terms of utility. You earned a degree you had to work for and its academics have been spoken well of on boards.

While your degree was earned prior to accreditation they generally are treated similarly since the school became accredited (though there are exceptions). Why not go on to earn the MDiv?

I can see that. Perhaps these words, from DI poster Jeff Hampton on June 15, 2003, in a thread on the now-accredited California Coast University sum up the situation pretty fairly:

I think many employers may understand accreditation a bit better today than they did ten or eleven years ago, but I doubt they're any more diligent at checking dates. All this, however, is predicated on Nations' attaining DETC accreditation - and that's a big IF. A wait-and-see situation.

You are right. If they do earn accreditation ( a longshot) I would not only go on for Mdiv at Nations but I would volunteer all I could in appreciation. I have quite a few credits from my MRS that they will accept for transfer.

Are the Religious Studies degrees focused on world religions or just the Bible? There are a number of (ironically, biblical) reasons why I'd not be interested in studying the Bible with a college, but if it was some sort of survey on history, culture, philosophy and contemporary practice, a free degree, accredited or not, sounds like it could be fun and informative. (and might help to answer those who keep asking me about WHEN I will be getting a Masters )

The MRS at Nations is a wonderful program; however, it only have a small comparative religion component (electives mostly) but basically is bible and biblical background based.

    Hi latebloomer,

I did apologise for incorrectly attributing the post to you, but I unreservedly apologise again. My postings are heavily delayed in appearing on the board as (i'm guessing because I am new?) all of them have to wait for approval from a moderator.

I am certainly not meaning to come across as argumentative and rude on this issue - I too am waiting hopefully for Nations to gain accreditation so I can get a degree that can be used in the real world, and I do understand your frustrations. I was just trying to say that we knew what we were signing up for, so should be content with what we got - if that changes and we can get an accredited degree, then that is a bonus.

    God bless.

Nothing yet? Why does DETC only meet twice per year and take them a month or more to post results? Just wondering. PS. Nations is putting out new videos etc. but not a word about accreditation.

I suspect they may be waiting like you are for DETC to send results. If they are positive the school will likely release a statement quickly. If not, then they need to formulate a well thought out approach about next steps (quit, appeal or retool), how they will deal with deficiencies and time lines.

Accreditors conduct reviews on an established schedule. All of this takes time though it is frustrating for people waiting. DETC normally takes weeks after a meeting to release results though some schools post accreditation before the official announcement.

The only thing I can suggest is to call DETC. I did once on another school and they were helpful within the limits of what they could say at that point.

In 2013, the DETC Accrediting Commission met on January 10-11. A report on that meeting, including accreditation and re-accreditation decisions, was issued in the DETC Bulletin dated February 8. That was 4 weeks after the end of the meeting.

In 2014, the DETC Accrediting Commission met on January 16-17. If they follow the same timing as 2013, then the results would be released 4 weeks later, which would be February 14 (this Friday). However, there is no guarantee that they will follow the same timing.

I tried to send an e-mail to DETC asking if Nations was even considered this time around and got crickets (not the results mind you but just asking if they were on the list). They seem to rival the CIA for secrecy. Cone of silence LOL

They won't respond by email. You have to call them.

I called and the person who answered the phone put me on hold and then got back on and said she could not find out if they were considered but asked me for my email so I could get a response. LOL. I gave it to her but am not expecting a reply. I was just intrigued after all this discussion to actually find out what was what.

Odd. I think when I called about another school a couple of years ago they called me back. I spoke with a staff person and later the President. Very nice people. Receptive and professional (only so much they can discuss at certain points so no guarantee you get all the info you want).

Well, I officially give up trying to make sense of this. Mystery over for me.

I did hear back via facebook that they can't even tell which schools were even considered. To be fair, they did contact me back.

Lol....well at least they were professional enough to call you back. I guess you have to respect the confidentiality aspect. Not much help to you though and so you wait. I do wish you a positive outcome (soon).
